IJp4aJ £" motion to coiamit; the Bill , Me Murray called for a division, ani the Bill was " committed by 84 agalast 31. In Commttee, Mr Pyke moved that the Bill do -got coroe into operation till 1976, but it waa defeated by 33 to 28. The Honse rose at 5.30. The Representation Bill just distributed enacts that the number of members be 82, exclusive of four Maoris. For the purpose of election of said number of members, electoral districts as constituted under "The Representation Act Amendment Act, 1871," shall, subject to the provisions ot this Act, be the electoral districts tor the purposes aforesaid. The nnmber of members to be returned by each of the said districts respectively, shall be as set forth opposite tbe name of snch district in thO schedule to " The Representation Act, 1870." as amended by "The Representation Act Amendment Act, 1871," (which said. Acts are hereinafter referred to as *. the said. Acts' ), except where otherwise provided by this Act. In addition fo the number oi members now returnable for the* undermentioned electoral, districts constituted under the said Aces, there Bhall.be returned for such districts the . number of members set opposite the name of each district, aa follows one member; Napier, one; Grey YetUey, one; Timaru, one; Hokitika, one; Waitaki. one; City of Dunedin, one; City of Christchurch district as constituted under this Act shall, in addition to the members now returnable foe the districts of *'City of Christchurch East " and ! of Christchurch West," retarn one member. The electoral districts of Christ- j church Bast and Chris 'church West as now stituted under the. said Acts, shall, together, form one electoral district, and be called by the name of " City of Christchurch District." The electoral districts of " Auckland City East," and "Auckland City Weat,'' aa now j constituted under the said Acts; shall together form one district, and be called by the name of " Auckland City District," except as provided by this Act, the electoral roll, which und^r ihe provisions of "The Registration Ot Electors Act, 1866," came into operation on the first day of Sept., IB7s_for the election of members, aa such districts were constituted immediately before the passing of this Act. shall remain in full. force and operation. If Parliament be summoned before she new electoral. rolls* hall have been formed, then the new Rouse to be elected as if this Act bad not been passed. * Saturday. The Honse reassembled at 7,30, when progress was reported on tha Debtors and Creditors Bill. j Tbe Committee went as far as clause 107 ' in the Stamp Duties Bl 1. Clauses 60 to 53 inclusive were postponed. Clause 89 re'ating to mortgages was struck out, and clause 96 j relating, to policies of Sea Insurance was j postponed. The Bills of Sale Bill passed. ! Mr Bowen moved the c-econd reading. of the Representation Bill, and said that considering the great organic changes about t<i be j effected, the Government did not think it advisable to go further in the adjustment of representation than're medying tbe most glaring inequalities. When the colony was laid off into shires would be the time to go fully into the question ot redistribution. Sir George Grey strongly opposed the Bill as unfair and improper in the way iv which it dealt with representation. . Mr Cuthbertson moved the adjournment of the debate. The House th.n went into Committee of ' Supply, and passed all the items in Class VI, | and adjourned at 12.3Q a.m. j
