The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1875.
'I ' — ' A most interesting football match may be looked for on Monday next. Th;e Auckland team, of whom great things were expected, have hitherto proved unable to compete with their opponentß ! "of the colder South, having' be^n defeated in every match they have played, in 'Wellington : by sixteen points to jojie : , in. Otago by. 9^ pbint^.tp a half pojujfc, and in Canterbury by "9| '..points to inoiie.u. Under these .circumstances, L'the-WelsO-i players are . confidently
expecting a triumph/bufc they must not fee too sure. -^ Notwithstanding that they have hitherto tnefiwi^h thefe' superiors in; Welliogton, Dunedfa, an\ Christchurch, the northerners arp good . men and true;, and :we rqajbe auVethat '^Hey wilt do their ''jljesfe tb/ wes~ fron£ Neison the laurels they have lost else- * ywhere. An excellent and hard fought game will be that on Monday afternoon, and no doubt there will be a largfe concourse of spectators assembled; to witnesathe inosfc exciting match that? has yet been played on the Nelson ground. Our men are in good trim, and they should' he able to giveagoM account of their friendly antagonists. A communication was addressed by Mr Luckie to the Mayor yesterday, stating that a deputation consisting of himself," Mr Curtis, .and ( Mr Shephard was to' wait upon the ' Minister fOr^P'tiblic Works this morning regarding the extension, of the railway. Mr Luckie further states that he has had several -interviews , : with Mr Richardson, and arguled tfrecase in eyery, possible way, and he adds: — " lam glad to say that Mr liich^r^on for, himself admitted the- cogency of ths trlpresentatioifs* though he seemed, perhaps, just a little . tired of my irr^pdrftfliity. However, he said he would receive the deputation, and told me what the answer would probably bd. M.6 said that he wau. now* thoroughly acquainted with the arguments, and that the question of the schedule of tbe Immigration and Public .Works Appropriation Bill for this year would be considered in the Cabinet tomorrow afternoon, and that the claims of Nelson would be duly considered, for both he and the other Ministers admit the existence of our grounds of claim, and are dispose to do us justice. lam disposed to draw a satisfactory conclusion from the conversations I have had with Mr Richardson." It will be seen by our telegrams that the petition con . taining 1530 signatures .was presented by Mr Curtis yesterday. [Since the above was in type we have received the following telegram from Mr Luckie: — " Messrs Curtis, Shephard, and myßelf interviewed Mr Eichardson to-day. The result was as anticipated in my commnuication to Mayor Levien yesterday. : Mr Eichardson made no definite ( . promise, but said the subject would be favorably considered by the Cabinet. He admitted the claims of Nelson. Private conversations with otber Ministers induce me to believe that all is favorable, and they recognise the rights ot i Nelsoh. Dr Renwick and • Major Richmond also spoke , to Dr Pollen today, * and he confirms Mr Luckie's former repor^. Aate* Dr Pollen and other Ministers' desire to do justice, I am sanguine that both ends' -of -railway will beprovided for.in the Appropriation Bill."] r .,,, ; ... , ? The Morting Troupe, with the infant "Lottie," whose * feats 6h the trapeze aire said to be very clever, will appear afc the Masonic Hall this evening. The Eev J. Beckenham will preach at thel Congreg^)ionaliGhur«.¥to. morrow morning and evening, and Major Paton at the Temperance Hall in the evening. A service, espfeciall^jfor thbiyotirigj mil be conducted in the Baptist Church by the Eev D. Dolamore to-morrow evening-
