Flogging Gabottebs,— The Ifcws of the World, of a recent date, says:— '• Two priaonera, named Jamea Debus, aged 21, and Charles Lewie, aged 18, received the punishment of 25 strokes from a cat-o'-nine-taila, on Wednesday rooming, within the G-aol of Newgate. They were convicted of a highway robbery with violence, at the last session | of the Central Criminal Court, before Mr. Commissioner Kerr j and Debu3, who bad been previously convicted, was sentenced to seven years* penal servitude, aod the punishment of the cat in addition, and Lewis to five years' penal servitude, and also the cat. From the time of their sentence, both the prisoners appeared to have a very great , dread of the punishment of the lash j sfcudj^frwis remarked to one of the officials as he was leaving the dock, that he could easily « rab off' the five years, but he could not • rub off' the cat. The first culprit who was brought out was Debus, and the moment he was firmly secured to the whipping-block, he began to roar lustily. When the first cut was given he shrieked loudly, and continued to scream and entreat for mercy until the whole of the punishment had been inflioted. Lewis bore his punishment with a little more fortitude, bat beconiinaed tohowlpiteously during the whole period of the flog-
