TBE MANNERS AND CUSTOMS OF THE CITY OF LONDON.

To the Editor op the 'Eveninc Mail.' Sir—When a school boy I was j taught that " Fair Play is a jewel," and ! I have never forgotten the proverb. Your correspondent under the signature of "Last Week" pretends to correct . Mr Augarde, when he ishimselt totally in terror. I also am a Freeman and Liveryman of the .great city, and I can inform J'Lasfc Week" that it is still necessary in the reign of Victoria before commencing a retail business, at any rate in the city, to take out your "Freedom," but it is not necessary, now —as it was in the days of " glorious memory "—that you should also have .been bound to a Freeman for seven .years. ■ • - , ; Again " anyone " can, and " anyone " cannot "be a Stock Broker 1' or jobber. Before "anyone" can be a Stock Broker in the City of London "anyone " must make a formal application to the proper authorities, and " anyone " , must be of unblemished (commercial) character at least, and be provided with j j securities (sureties) of undoubted responsibility, who are required to enter into heavy bonds for " anyone's " good behavior, and men of straw are nofc allowed to pass muster. They must be men of undoubted substance, able to pay the bond if required. The difference "Last Week" sees between a Stock Broker and a member of the / Stock Exchange is incorrect. Every/ Sfiock Broker would be a member of the Stock Exchange, but every member J of:the Stock Exchange is not a, S£aWi Bfoker. The term Stock jobber K think "Last Week" does not understand.—l am, &c, ' T Veritas. \ September 20,1875. \
