To the Editor op the « Evening Mail ' Sir— -In the notice of the last meeting of the City Council, £ observe thst a report from the Manager of the Gas Works was received in which amongst ot i er matters a statement id made about the quantity of pas made from a given quantity ot Collingwood coal, and r sort of comparison of a iike quantity of Greymouth coal ehows to the advantage of the latter, *o far as quantity of gas is concerned Now, without imputing any intention on the part of the manager to mislead, I submit that the report aa given has that effect, and would lead people unacquainted with those matters to conclude that for gas-making purposes the Greymouth coal is superior to that from the

Colhrgwood mine. Now. unless specific gravity and illuniinatiag power are given along yith quaoti'y, it leaves the question of comiparative value complexly untouched. It may a 5 w <-« therefore in any future reports to avoid tbeie misleading comparisons, a* any comparative statement of quantities should be accompanied by photometric results.
