CITY COUNCIL.

Tho Council met last last night when, after several letters had beea read, a discussion arose relative to the telegrams that had passed between Mr Dcd.oo arid Mr Curtis relative to the election of tbe Mayor by the ratepayers. The Mayor said he did not think such a change at alt desirable. Mr Dodson had spoken to him on the subject, and he had then expressed the same views. He regarded it as nothing more or ies» than a piece of imper.inence— originating perhaps in vanity ior any ono not being a public mau to undertake to express the wish of the ratepayers without consulting them. Several of "tbe Councillors stated that they had heard no expression of public opinion on the matter, and expresse I surprise that Mr Dodson shomd have taken upon himge'f to move in the matter. A petition from certain ratepayers against the erection of Mr Carter's weighbridge whs read, and permission to erect it was refused. The report of the Manager of Gasworks was read. It showed that during August there h*d been 321,740 cubic feet manufactured, the avei age per ton being 8,200 feet. The Collingwood coal had been tried,, and produce! very satisfactory results, five cwt having yielded 2000 feet of gas, which he coaci iered of greater illuminating power than that from the Grey coal. The coal received lrom the Grey lately had been better than usual. The Council then proceeded to appoint a City Sarveyor, it being first decided that whoever should be elected must find security, and sign a memorandum regarding tho duties he was expected to perform. Jn all there wero eleven applications, namely:— W. A. Spence, Wellington, late of the 77th regiment; A. H. Keene, Dunedin; P. J. Dalton, C.E., Auckland; T.
