The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1875.

Me Kerb, the lion, treasurer of the Nelson Aid Society, desires to acknowledge with thanks 'the receipt of £1 Is from Dr Boor, and £2 from C. Hunter Brown, Esq., in aid of the funds of the Society. The Sisters Duvalli arrived by the

Hawea this morning, and will make their first appearance in Nelson at the Odd-Fellows' Hall to-night. The entertainment, which cousists of acting, siuging, and dancing, promises to be an attractive one, judging from the programme which appears in our advertising columna. James Way, a gentleman who has an extraordinary liking for the inside of Her Majesty's gaol, was brought before the Eesident Magistrate this morning charged with keeping a house of ill-fame, and fined £5, or in default two months' imprisonment. Ho chose the latter. We were glad to find a well-filled house at the Odd-Fellows' Hall hist night, the occasion being an entertainment given by the members of the Artizans' Association in aid of the widow of the late Captain Lake. A number of songs which were loudly applauded, and many of them encored, formed the first part, and were followed by a step dance by Mr Chittenden and a pupil of his, which called forth a storm of applause. The Nelson acrobats were th« n«xt to entertain the audience, and as usual did their work well. The farce "Jack and Jack's Brother" very creditably acted, brought to a close an exceedingly agreeable entertainment, the financial result of which will form a welcome addition to the fund now being raised for the poor woman for whose benefit it was given. In response to the invitation contained in an advertisement, about twenty ladies interested in the Nelson Aid Society met yesterday afternoon in the Harmonic Hall, when Mrs Suter was elected President, and Mrs R. Carvosso Allen, Hon, Sec, and the following ladies were appointed to act as a Committee : — Mesdames Leighton, TBuddle, Broad, Dolamore, Biss, Crooke, J. Hooper, Short, Boor, and Miss McHardy, seven to form a quorum. The following resolutions were passed: — • That the Ladies' Committee meet once a month; That a special meeting be held on Friday, the lOfch instant; That the town be divided into districts for the more systematic visiting ; That any one disposed to assist in the work of visiting be invited to send in her name to the Secretary of the Ladies' Committee, stating over what portion of the town such proposed visiting shall extend. We are glad to learn that the mistake that has occurred in delaying to give notice of the election of City Councillors is not likely to prove of any serious consequence, as, under tho " Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Act, 1868," the Governor in Council has the power to extend the time. His Excellency has been communicated with, and the necessary order will, no doubt, be received by the next steamer from Wellington. His Worship the Mayor received a telegram from Mr Curtis this morning stating that the Nelson City Loan Bill for the extension of gas and waterworks passed the third reading in the House last night. The Hon. N. Edwards will take charge of it in the Legislative Council. Lately, Mr Luckie essayed to instruct the House on the subject of taxation. He said, " What is wanted "—then he made a pause, best expressed in printers' language by a series of metal-rules. Again he said " what is wanted " — and again a pause. " Hear, hear," cried an honorable member, which so disconcerted Mr Luckie that he had to get to another subject, and posterity will remain in ignorance of what was wanted. — G. R. Argus.
