The trial trip of the twin-screw steamer Kennedy, after the extensive overhaul she has undergone, took place this afternoon, with very sstisfacory results. The measured mile outside the Boulder Bank was ruo, up the Bay, in 6mins 48secs, and the return in C ruins 4,5 sees, thus giving a speed of about nine knots, which, seeing that the screws I aye never been . turned before, and that all the rnavhioery was necessarily somewhat aliff, may be considered very good. The Kennedy, which has been laid up for six months, vow puts in an appearance almost as an w boat. She has a new bottom, and wherever a faulty plate existed in her sides a new one has been substituted for it. Her main deck has b.cn raised, thus enabling her to carry 16 additional tons of cargo. Her cabins both fore nud aft have been enlarged and well fitted up; the former will now accommodate 30 passengers, and tbe latter, including the ladl.s' cabin, which has been made very snug, a similar number. She haa been fitted witu n-.w boilers and compound rngints of 42 horsepower by Fraser and Tinne, of Auckland, aud her bunkers will now carry five days' supply of coa'. New ecrew?. with feathering blades, five feet in diameter, have been substituted for the' old ones, which were only four feet. In fa t she U now one of th 9 most comfortable aud well found boats on the coast, and Mr Symons was well entitled to the eongratulatio/ia he received from his numerous friends who Jassemb'ed on board at his iuvitition to-day. The whole o£ tbe work has been carried out un ler the superintendence of Mr Brown, thti engineer to the firm of Messrs N, Fdwar is & Co, at their foundry at the port, where all the ironwork wa« complettd, induding the forging of the shaUe, which measure 4£ inches in diameter. Mr Symons is to be congratulated not only upon the smart little fleet he now owns, but upon having co competent an engineer to superiotnd tbe repairs aid alterations that must I necessarily be so frequently required by his j fire steamers.
