The death of Mr Beckhara, the Resident Magistrate at Auckland, reported in our telegroms yesterday, makes Mr Cross, the harbor-master at Jfelson, the oldest servant in the employ of the General Government, he having entered the service in 1842. ; Thr Customs revenue for tha quarter ending June 30, 1875, the Customs revenue of the colony amounted to £298,364 against £286,794 for tha corresponding period of the previous year. The total for the year was £1,223,276. To this the port of Nelson contributed for the quarter £9,411 against £7,634 for the corresponding quarter of 1874, and for tha year. £45,128 Judge Fellows, of Victoria, io his sbmmiog up in the libel action of Dobson v. Daily Telegraph, said :— '• The Press was not only justiQed, but it waa its duty to 'rip up' where % |here was the suspicion of an illegal ' bargain' between public man." If jiries would act upon that diotum, newspapers would have little cauae to be afraid of doing their duty.
