Chkistchtjech, Monday. In the cricketing average first published C. C. Corfe heads the list of batmen with 355 for seven first-class matches; next being J. Fowler, 229 for ten matches. T. S. Sweet heads the list of bowlers with average 6-31 runs, per wicket in 17 matches; Fuller scoring next with B'2l runs per wicket, in 15 matches. Efforts are being made to establish a Press Club here—similar to that in Dnnedin. It is supposed that the bodies and pieces of wreck found near Long Beach on Ninety Mile Beach are from the missing vessel Success, of Auckland, which had to run out of Timaru roadstead during the gale on Saturday, June 5. The Jockey Club have decided that no two year olds shall run in any handicap in which horses are engaged, nor any two year old race be for longer distance than six furlongs. The funeral of the late Captain Charlesworth yesterday, was stopped by the police, on the ground that an inquest must be held, as death resulted from an accident. The friends of the deceased were greatly aggravated, as Dr Frank had given certificate of death caused by erysipelas. It is reported that a man named Tiddell has found a silver mine in the xauges near Westport. DuNEDrsr, Monday. Mr H. Bennett, formerly providore for the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company is the successful tenderer for providing the Harbor Company's steamers. A meeting is to be held with the view of inviting Moody and Sankey here to revivalise. It is expected they would start to New Zealand. The "Wesleyans are the principal movers. A match came off on Saturday between Edwards, the' "Wellington pedestrian; and Bird, a local amateur, for £40 a side. The former engaged to walk seventy yards while the latter ran a hundred, which, resulted in dead heats. The butchers have raised the price of meat a penny a pound. . A Corporation Provision Company is projected. A. Bill has been introduced into the Council providing for a Harbor Board at Moeraki. Napier, June 14. The Chief Justice was entertained at a dinner by the members of the Club, after which his Honor left for Wellington. It is reported that the Government hare offered M'Kirdy fifty pounds per week for every week his portion of railway is finished under coutract time.
