LAST NIGHT'S COUNCIL.
The Council met at four o'clock. — Mr Donnk moved, " That the following resolution passed by the Provincial Council on Wednesday, May 26, be rescinded, viz. : — That in the opinion of this Council the Estimates sent down by the Executive and passed by the Council, should be a first charge upon the revenue of the province, and ihat until they shall have been fully satisfied other votes ought not to be dealt with by the Executive." — The debate was adjourned for a wesk. Mr Shabp BBked the Provincial Secretary, "Whether any, and if so what, steps are proposed to be taken by the ' Provincial Government for providing for his Excellency the Governor, shortly expected at Nelson. "• — The reply was that no steps bad yet been taken. Mr M'Guirb moved, "That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to place upon the Supplpmentary Estimates the sum of £80, to provide half the cost of protective works at Nelson Creek." — The motion was disposed of by the previous question. Mr M'GuiRE moved, "That the Provincial Secretary be requested to lay on the table the surveyor's report relative to certain protective works at Nelson Creek." — Agreed to. Mr Acton Adams moved, " The recommendations of the report of the Committee on the circumstances attending the removal from office of Henry Clouston, viz.:—(l). That, should the Provincial Government not confer on Mr Clouston within a reasonable time (s^y-six months) some situation «ffordsfog suitable emolument, further compensation should be granted him, making with that already awarded, n Bum equal to one year's salary, namely, £250 in nil. (2). That where a public servant is removed from office without fault imputed, he should receive a sum of money as compensation," iqu til to one month's salary for every year (less two) that he had been in the Governmeut employ ; provided that no compensation thus receivable should exceedo_ne year's salary."— lt was agreed tk6t the two resolutions should be dealt ''with separately. Two or three amendments were moved upon the first, some of which were lost and some carried, until ultimately the resolution waß reduced to the word "That," and as such
it still Bands in the minutes of the Council. — Upon the second being proposed, Mr Kelling moved the adjournment of the debate for a week. This was carried on a division by 15 to 4. On the motion of Mr Gibbs it was resolved, "That his Honor the Superintendent be requested to represent to the General Government the necessity of constructing a bridge over the river Greyj between Cobden and Greymouth.'* On the motion of Mr Gibbs it was resolved, "That his Honor .the Superintendent bo requested to make arrangements whereby a line of road laid off past the property of Mr T, E. Skilton, between tht> Quartz Range road and the ford on the Aorere river may be opened, and the work carried out under the provisions of the 6r,h section of the Waste Land.3 AcU 1874"
