We are indebtel to a passenger by the Murray for the fol'owinz:— Tie a s. Murray arrived off rho Li/btbou'e this morniapr at 5 o'clock, after a rather pjiilous journey, being in a disabled condition, owing to the shaft having broken completely through, a thorl distance from Westport, which port the had left at 10 p.m. on Wednesday. It fortunately happened that the weather was not so bad on the (."out as it appears to have been elsewhere, or some'hing very terious might ha^e resulted. Immediately upon the mishap occurring, every effort was mide by the Captain and engineer to repair, if possible, the d image, . but the break being close up to the eccentrics it was not until some time had elapsed, and a considerable amount of ingenuity displayed, that it was at all possible to temporarily repair tbe broken part. Tha Wallace was sighted on Thursday morning aiid requeted to report the accident, but success having partially attended the effor's of the engineer, the vessel was steamed slowly up to within 20 miles of Kelson, when the part again carried away. However, once more it was patched up, and the whs brought safely to an anchorage at the time above stated, and it is a matter of considerable saiislaction that the mishap of the gcod little ship has ended so well. The New Zealand Shipping Company's ship Kakaia, the third wool ship cf the season, has cleared at the Customs, Inveroargill, with a cargo of 4453 bales of wool, valued at £98,405. There is yet a surplus ot nearly : 1000 bale 3of wool to go coastwise.
