Fmart Wobk. — At tho nomination to-day, the Returning Officer took the chair punctually at twelve o'clock. By ten minutes past the candidate had been proposed and seconded, aud had returned thanks, and the writ was in ihe Superintendent's hands duly endorsed.
Christ Church. — This being Ascension Day there will be a special choral service in the above cbmch this evening, commencing ct 7 30. The Bervice will be as follows: — Introit: O come ye servants of the Lord, Dr Tye; Psalms: 24th Battishill in D; 47th Dupuis in A, 108 th Battishill in A; Canticles: Magnificat and Nunc Dimitiis, Ebdon in C; Anthem: I will lift vp mineeyes, Dr Whitfield; Hymns: 207, Zurich; 215, Angels' Song. Waimea West. — An entertainment consisting of vocal and instrumental music is to be given by the members of the Waimea West Band on Wednesday evening next. It should bo largely patronised by the residents in the Waimeas, as the Band, which has but recently been formed, has, under the conductorship of Mr Claridge, made such progress as to be a real credit to the district in which it was originated. Bankruptcy. — The Gazette of this morning announces the bankruptcy of James Beattie, accountant. Good Templars — The installation of officers of Loyal Nelson Lodge takes place to-morrow evening. The La.te Accidents. — A meeting of the subscribers to the fund will be held at the Masonic Hotel on Saturday afternooQ at three o'clock, for the purpose of appointing a Committee to apportion the amount subscribed. Baker's Hibernicon. — This entertainment appears to retain its popularity, the Odd-Fellows' Hall being well filled every night. The singiDg oftheMessrs Baker is alwayß loudly applauded, and Mr Verner's drolleries convulse bis audience with laughter. Miss O'Laughlin is a great favorite as a dancer, and Mr Cullimore delights his hearers with his piano playing. Add to this the attractions of the panorama, and what more can be desired? City Council. — The following notices of motion were given by Cr Gray on Tuesday evening: — To afek permission from the Council to fence in a portion of the Rocks commonly called " The Big Basin," for bathing purposes. —"That, from and after the Ist of Juue next, a charge be made to all consumers of gas in accordance with Clause 12 of the •• Nelsou City Gas Act, 1871," on the following scale: — Three light meters, sixpence per meter; five ditto, tenpence; ten ditto, la 3J j fifteen ditto, Is 6d; twenty ditto, Is 9d; thirty ditto, 2s; and proportionate rates for larger sues."
' NeloonEootball Club— A meeting, at which about twenty were present, was held lost night, when Mr W. Barnicoat was appointed Secretary and Messrs Clouston, Tennent, Roy, and Hugh Gully members of the Committee, A paragraph from a Wellington paper having been read, to the effect that the Club in that city proposed adopting rules which were " a sort of combination of those adopted by the Rugby Union and the Melbourne Association," a resolution was passed to the effect that the Society be requested to communicate with the WelliDgton Club asking for information regarding these rules, and at the same time to state that the Nelson Club were disposed lo adhere to the old Rugby rules. The Committee were authorised to make arrangements for shifting the goals, reducing the distance between them from 120 to 100 yards, Buch alteration being required by the character of the ground. It was stated that the New Plymouth Club would be glad to receive a visit from the Nelson players, and aleo that there was a probability of Wellington sending over a team during the ensuing winter. The opening game of the season will take place in the Botanical Gardens on Saturday afternoon next.
