A Christchurch contemporary says s •—The number of gaming tables at the races has increased so greatly of late that the police have received instructions to put them down. A raid was made upon them on Friday, and several of their proprietors summoned before the Resident Magistrate on Saturday, but being the first chsob of the kind brought into the Court all the defendants were dismissed with a strong caution. Quite a Doyel swindle is now on foot in* Melbourne, says the Town and Country, in the shape of sixpences which have all the appearance of halfsovereigns. A would-be perpetrator of this fraud was detected, and has revealed the following strange fact : — If a clean sixpence is put into the mouth while smoking a pipe, it will, in the course of an hour or so, acquire a golden tinge, which, by gaslight, is easily mistaken for the gennine article.
