KARAMEA gfcT'TLEMEffT.
Toj-thi: Editok of the 'Evening MaiL. j ' s Siß.r-Mr Hylaisd, the overseer of the Karamea pettkment, is on a visit to Nelson, and tlure is a rumor here, that if lha authorities murmur against him for tbe mann'-r m which he his conducted sfiairs at Kuramea he will resign. My Hyland has won ihe respect of everyone here; ruling his little colony with an imp utial hand, strictly ju kt in all his dealing*, and being a coli«nUt ot 28 >ears Bton iog, he is a capital judge of all kinds of work, fc-ome of the nien that left the Karntne* soon after landing there, gave him a name in your columns which, if sworn to would g6' a great way towards hanging him, tut some of those men that left the settlement conferred a great bentfit upon it by doing io, and wou'd confer a great benefit upon any other place they might chance to leave, settled or unsettled. Their account of him being a hard task master was glaringly false. A vißitor to the Btttlement cannot fail to BDe that all the settlers are contented aod happy. The only thing likely to retard the growth of the settlement is that Mr Hyland cannot do as he likes, or send for what he likes, and no one kr.bws better what i 3 required than he does. This being the e«se his appointment as superintendent is a farce and a bitter mockery, let the authorities then give him full control, merely exacting a strict account, of Ms stewardship. They, the authorities, can vhit the tettlement as heretofore and inspect its progress, they can then hear any complaints ihe settlers may have to m»ke against the overseer. If anyone is distatistleii with him it should be the settlers. Hoping you will find space for this I am, &c, A Sutler. Karamea, April -1,1875.
