What the Lord Mayor really did say is more correctly reported in the Times of January 1. It was as follows:— Suggestions might still be made for the betCer regulation of emigrant ships, and, in that case, he bad no doubt tbey would be adopted by every shipowner in the country engaged in the trade. Otherwise the stream of emigration might be diverted from New Z a. and — hitving regard to the long voyage — and made to flow in the direction of the United States and Canada. A Dunedin telegram of Monday Biya :— Last October a man named Grarit, who rnakeß a living here*l'by . hawking his pamphlets, containing scurrilous articles on anybody and everything, addressed a letter to the " people's paper," Dundee, containing a tissue of lies and abuse about New Zealand, its climate, prospects, and progress, and condemning theinHnMwration system. Mr James Adams, the Otago Immigration Agent, replied to it in a Dundee paper, and the Times this morning publishes a letter from Mr Adams, in which he states that the credibility of the writer (Grant) mny be inferred when he says, "that, for 19 years he bas spent annually £1000 in tho diffusion of knowledge throughout the land;'' whereas a subscription had to be got up for the poor man to help him back to Melbourne where he camfrom. He went so far, and then retjrned to Duneiiin, and haß ever since lived a miserable existence in publishing a low paper, in which he rails at public institutions, and specially at those gentlemen who have shown him the greatest kindness and forbearance. So far from speodiag £1000 yearly, his family would have starved but for the industry of his wife, who has had to keep herself by washing the clothes of the very persons he assumes to have educated. Mr Adams' letter has given meat satisfaction in Dunedin, and is considered not too strong.
