Wellington, Wednesday. Mr W. S. Reid, formerly Assistant Law Officer, has been appointed Solicitor-General for the Colony. A good deal of bill drafting for next session is being done outside the Government office. The swearing in of tbo Chief Justice did not take place to-day owing to Sir George Arney holding sitings in Banco in Auckland. The ceremony fs to take place to-morrow, after which the Chief Justice leaves for fcouth per Easby. Thursday. There hare been several cases of typhoid fever recently which resulted fatally. Arrived— Omeo, from Lyttelton. Sailed — Taranaki, for Picton, Nelson, and North. Christchtjroh, Wednf sdoy. Mr Justice Greseon sat for the latt time as Judge of the Supreme Court this morning. Mr Justice Williams and 22 member* of the Bar were present. Mr Duncan, Crown Prosecutor and President of the Canterbury Law Society, presented him with a farewell address, speaking very eulogistically of his Honor's conduct on the Bench and the urbanity which he evenly displayed to members of ihe Bar practising before him. His Honor, who wns very much affected, replied at length, detailing circumstances leading 1 to his retirement and remarking that it' was not compatible with the independence of Judges of the Supreme Court for them to be subject to removal by the Ministry, when and as often as such Ministry pleased. A fire occurred in the stables of the Devonshire Hotel yesterday afternoon. Fortunately it waß calm weather, and the smartness of the lire brigade prevented the flames from spreading. Damage estimated at £1000. Insurance- .£400 in the b'outh British.

Mr Justice Chapm»n look hig farewell from the Bench this morning, about S2 members of the Bar being preseut. Auckland, Wednesday. Judge Arney this afttrnoon took leave of the Bench and Bar. Mr Wbitaker, on behalf of himself and colleagues, m°de a fhort fare"well speech in which he expatiated upon the patient, irnparrial, consideration which his tlonor had always bestowed upon cases brought before him, and the courU sy he had always extended to the legal profession. They were sincerely sorry to lose him, and at the same time trusted that he would live long and enjoy that ea?e in retirement he had so well merited. His Honor responded, and in a speech replete with feeling thanked them for their kind expression of good will. Be said time and failing years n ndered it impossible for him to disc harge his duties satisfactorily. He spoke encouragingly to young men who were members of ihe Bar, and said the time would come when the Bar would be a power in the Jand.
