PRESENTATION TO MR. O'CONOR.
Tb.3 following reply to the letter accompanying a' §urn lof moaey subscribed, for the purpose of paying the costs in the case of Knyvetfc v. O'Conor has besn addressed by Mr O'Conor to Mr Haddow : — "Nelson, March 29th, 1875. "My dear Sir— l hive the honor to acknowledge ihe receipt of your letter of the 20th inst., with cheque enclosed for £123 Is, tho amount sutscriDed by residents in the proYince- with a. view to indemnify mo ngainst the verdict of the special jury in the case of Kovvett w. O'Conor. , 41 1 beg mo it sincerely to thank you for tho kindness find courtesy exhibited by your letter, and I also desire most sincerely to thank the subscriccra for their generosity and spirited action, but v, ould desire with your permission neither to accept nor positively decline the amount subscribed, for the present. '• As Provincial Treasurer I found it my duty (though a very unpleasant task) to check a system pernicious to tho" public interest, and while adopting a necessary course of action which exposed and effectually stopped a continuance of improper practices, lefD me personally to a great, extent at iln mercy of political opponents and of parties interested in combating the policy it has been my duty to establish. In conclusion, I have only to add that my reason for desiring not to accept any indemnity on ray own account at present is because I think it just that the representatives of the people in the Provincial Council should first have an opportunity of deciding whether the damages and casts in this case are to be born£ by me personally, or to be paid by the province.
