CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night. Present, all the members. - ' A letter was read from Mr Alfred Harley, complaining of the quality of the coke obtained from the gasworks, and claiming to have the sum of £3 refunded. Mr Younger had written explaining that it was impossible in the present state of the retorts to extract all tbe gas from the coal. Referred to the Gas Committee. Messrs Fell and Atkinson wrote, on behalf of their client, Mr Shirtcliffe, claiming £7 for damages to his horse by stepping into a hole in Hardy-street. Resolved, That the matter be inquired into before any decision be arrived at. A letter was received from Mr M'Gee complaining of a drain on the property of Mr Younger in Russell-street. Resolved, That Mr Younger be requested to abate the nuisance. Mr Gnrrett wrote elating that he was willing to withdraw his letter of the 4th instant. A letter was received from Mr R. Carter, requesting permission to encroach about three feet on Waimeastreet in the erection of a weighbridge. Resolved, That Cr Everett's name be temporarily added to the Public Works Committee, in the place of Cr Carter's, for the purpose of enquiring into, and reporting upon the matter. A letter was received from Mr W. Evans, complaining of the state of the bridge in Tasman-streef, and offering to give his labor towards repairing it. Referred to tbe Public Works Committee. A lengthy discussion took place on Cr Webb's resolution, " That a competent person be employed to prepare a plan and specification for the reconstruction, where necessary, of the sewers in Waimea and Hardy-street, with extension to Halifax-street; such plan to be in accordance with the scheme proposed by the Board of Works at the time the sewer in Tra-falgar-street was built." Ultimately, it was resolved that the matter Bhould stand over for six months. The consideration of several motions, of which notice had been giveD, was deferred until Monday next, to which evening the Council adjourned.
