The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 1875.

City Rifles. — At a meeting of the members of this corps held last night, Mr A. M'Kellar Wix was elected captain, and Mr Edward Adams lieutenant. Cricket. — A challenge has been received by the Nelson Club from (he Westland cricketers, and the match will probably be played here about the second week in April. Grass Fibe.— Some careless individual was sufficiently foolish to light a fire on the hill at the back of Major Richmond's property this afternoon, which, with the strong S.W. wind that was blowing, Boon spread, and swept over Mr Thornton's garden near tha cutting at the head of Washington Valley, destroying a number of valuable fruit trees in its course. Mr Johnson's house, we hear, had a narrow escape, as did the trees and shruba on Mr Rodgerson's property, which would certainly have been destroyed but for the assistance of a number of neighbors, who turned out to check the progress of the fire. An Error — We are requested to correct a mistake in the report of the meeting of the Naval Brigade, which

appeared in this morning's Colonist, in which it waa stated that the first and second lieutenants were elected, and that Mr Richardson was to be asked to act as captain. The officers were not elected but only nominated, and further nominations will be received by the Secretary up to Friday next. Mr Richardson and Mr Fell were nominated as captain. City Council. — A special meeting of the Council was held last night, when several matters were brought on for discussion, but nothing of importance was done. It was decided that the affairs of the office should be placed under the control of the Mayor, and the Gas and Waterworks Committee were authorised to lay on the water and gas wherever they might deem it expedient to do so. Good Templars.— A meeting was held at the Loyal Nelson Lodge last night, at which the Hon. W. Fox was present, Ho addressed the meeting at some length, and regretted that the ministers of the various churches in the colony did not do more to assist the Templars. He regretted to see so many publio houses in Nelson, and thought it was owing to them that so large a Lunatic Ayslum and Hospital were required. He hoped to visit Nelson again in a couple of years, anil to find that the Order had in the meantime made great progress. A vote of thanks was unanimously accorded to him at the close of his address. Naval Brigade. — A general meeting of the Naval Brigade was held at the Custom House Hotel last evening. Mr D. Burn, who was voted to the chair, explained the object of the meeting, viz., to nominate officers, and to swear in the members. The Commanding Officer of the District (Captain Marshall), explained, to the meeting the duties required of volunteers, and then proceeeed to swear in the members. The nomination of officers next took place, when Mr Ralph Richardson and Mr C. Y. Fell were nominated as captain; Mr L. Gully waa nominated as first, and Mr J. Infield as second lieutenant. A committee was elected, consisting of (with! the officers) Messrs D. Burn, F. Handle, 11. White, W. Johnson, and W. Simpson. Mr E. H. Tribe was proposed and elected secretary. After some discussion about the uniform, it was resolved that it should be the same as that of her Majesty's Navy • but in the case of the officer?, substituting silver for gold lace. It was agreed that Tuesdays a>ad Fridays be drill nights. The committee were instructed to Bee about a site for the battery, and to report at next meeting. It was resolved that nominations for officers might be sent in to the Secretary up to Friday next. After a vote of thanks to the chairman the meeting terminated. Cricket Extraor unary. — A very curious cricket match was played in the Wairarapa last Wednesday between the Featherston and Masterton Clubs. The Featherston men went in first and made the respectable score of i 37. Then followed- the Maslertonians, who succeeded in performing this remarkable feat : — Five men made one single run each ; their opponents presented them with four byes, and thus the gigantic total of 9 was put together ! Thiß being just 128 runs short of the Featherston first innings, the Masterton men proceeded with their second effort. This time one of these redoubtable players made the imposing score of "2 not out." Three others made a run a-piece, but, alas ! the remnioing Beven only produced the number of "duckeggs." The total score off the bat waa therefore the same as in the former innings — 5, but on this second occasion the Featherston men, with a generosity which cannot be too highly praised, presented them with just a dozen extras, which, being rather more than twice the number made by the bat, raised the total of the innings to 17, the grand total being 2G 1 The Featherston men thus were victorious in one innings, with 111 runs to spare. — Post.
