The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 1875.

- ■ - 1 Nav^l Brigade, — The acceptance of the services of this corps by the Governor haa been gazetted, to date from the 19th of January. Yacht Eacb. — The yachts Minnehaha and Star etarted for the race from the Government wharf at 10*40 this tnorniDg, the wind being very light, and kept pretty well together as far as they could be seeu. Our correspondent telegraphs from Motueka:— At 3 10 p.m. a boat without a topsail, supposed to be the Star, was ahead. Caution. — Thero was a narrow escape from the destruction by fire of a considerable amount of property on the Port road and iiills this morning, owing to a woman having incautiously lighted a fire outside her house. The dry grass immediately caught, and the fire rau with great rapidity up the hill, and had it not been for the exertion of Mr Adam and a man employed at the gasworks, whose name we have not heard, there is no knowing where it would have stopped. People caunot be too cautious at this time of year about lighting fires outside. The Gasworks. — We regret to learn that another leak has occurred in one of the retorts, and consequently that the supply of gas is likely to be exceedingly limited to-night. Conaumerß should therefore be careful to use ns little as they can possibly do with. Every endeavor is being made to repair damages, and it i8 hoped that in the course of two or three days, a full supply may again be obtainable. Para Para Iron and Coat. Cos:TANY. — The first general meeting of the shareholders of this company look place last evening at the Masonic Hall; there was a fair attendance, and the directors Iroughfc up their report, together with a progress report from the General

Manager, Mr Anderson. The following gentlemen were re-elected as directors, viz , R. Levien, E. Everett, J. Scott, J. Walker, J. S. Cross, R. Blackmore, P. Hanna, A. Bothwick, the two new directors being Messrs. T. Field, and G. Harper. The question of remunerating directors wns discussed and postponed until the next general meeting, which will take place some time in November next. Waiuiea Steeplechase Mf.bting. — It will be seen by advertisement that the date of this meeting has been fixed for Thursday, April 15. The funds of the club not, being in a very flourishing condition just now, the prizes have been made smaller than usual, but there is no reason why there should not be a good day's sport as there generally is at Wakefield, where the hack races in themselves are an immense source of amusement. Tfc is said that in addition to the advertised events there will be a sweepstake of £10 each, for which three horses will be entered, their owners being desirous of ascertaining their respective merits.
