Wellington, Monday. A supplement to the Gazelle of Thursd ,y contains a proclamation revoking Ihat dated February 27,1873, prohibiting the importation into New Z aland of all caule, horses, she p, and pigs, and carrases, skiDs, horns, hooft, and every other part thereof. Another proclamation assigns the Northern district (of tho Middle Island?) to Mr Justice Gilließ; the Canterbury District to Mr Justice Johnston ; and tlie Otago and Southland District to Mr Justice Williams. A shock of ca'thquake lasting several seconds was felt at 5*30 on Sunday morning by many peop'e, who describe it as sharp. The native title to the islet near Cape Maria Van Dieman has been extinguished, and the islet reserved as a site for a lighthouse. CiißisTcnoßcir, Saturday. The first prize in the first set of district prizes, a silver medal, has been won hy Private Cameron, ofthe Wood End Kifles an old representative at the Colonial Prize Firing, with a score of 58 points. Ihe first prize in the second set -was won by Gunner Hill of the Christchurch Artillery, with a score of 72 points. The Council this morning decided to grant licenses to all the cabmen whose claracter and capabilities were satisfactory, and aa the cabmen intimate that they had withdrawn their guarantee from legal licenses, no moro litigation takes place. | This may be very interesting to those who know what it means, but we don't understand it even a little bit.] Dunedin, Saturdiy. The cases of assault on the police continued to-Jay, when Thomas Logarty was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, without tha
option of a fine, for assauliing a constable. The Daily Time* says:— "Ere long we ehall have to consider tho propriety of ns'nsr tlie lash to check brutality;" and the Guaidian, " The power of fining should ho atolishcd." Guahamstown, Saturday. A number of men are returning from the Ohiueu-Uri, and report that nothing fresh Ins transpired. The protection of claims expires oa Monday at ten o'clock, when they mußt be manned or abandoned. There is literally nothing to report, and anything like a rush is deprecated, un'ess miners come prepared to prospect. The country is very rough, making prospecting very costly. Atjcic-AN-., Monday. Sir George Grey, at the invitation of the deputat'on, has issued an address to the electors. He says that although greatly attached to provincialism, he will do whatever is the expressed desire of the people, but will strenuously oppose the abolition of provincialiem unhss it applies to the whole colony He will also contend for the submission of any constitutional changes to the people before their final adoption.
