Mr Fell appeared for tho plaintiff, and Mr Pitt iov the defendant. In delivering judgment, the Resident Magistrate said that he bad no doubt that the plaintiff was bound lo recover. The Evening J'ost of Monday last says: — By the Manawatu to-dny, we received a very fine branch of hops grown by Mr J. R. Hooper, of Grovestreet, Nelson. The suitability of tho

A woman named Minnie Benzie, who some little time since jumped into the Buller river, while under the influence of liquor, and was with difficulty reecued, has again been suffering from a similar cauee, and in her demented state hatl wandered away, none knew whither. She has always contrived to keep out of the way of whales, and to return to port'— that most' undesir-, able thing to the owners of a whaler — a cleau ship; or with little more oil than would fill a widow's cruse. The Auckland correspondent of the Otago DaUy Timea. however, is able at last to report that the barque has been among the whales, and has been spoken with "110 barrels of sperm oil, the produce of one large whale." That whale must have been very like a whale '.iudeed — one that would have given Jonah comfortable lodgings ! It is a very huge whale wl.ich runs eleven tuns, aud as the uumber of barrels to the tun is limited, the Albion's catch was probably a fish of ten or twelve tuns — no bad catch at the present price ot oil.— N. Z, Times. f^The Inangahua Herald writes:— "With Westport we shall have road communication for wheel traffic established not later than September, ln point of business this route will posseßS a slight advantage in connecting with the seaboard over tbat of Greymouth. There will be fewer dangerous crossings, and traffic will be conducted with somewhat less expense, the tolls and bridges being not so numerous on that eide. The difference is insufficient, however, to be likely to make iiself immediately felt in a perceptible diversion of trade and traffic from Greymouth to Westport. Old established connections are uot easily broken, but it will be readily UDderEt>orl thnt other circumstances may cotnbino lo fuvor the latter.
