Melbourne, Feb. 10. The hot weather continues, the las>t few days showing a steady average of 95 in the shade, but the water supply continues abundant, and many restrictions as to its use have been removed. Another vessel has been wrecked on King's Islaud. The British barque Bleacathra, 900 tons, from Glasgow to Sydney, ran on the rocks dv ing squally weather on the night of the 3rd instant. The captain mistook the island light for the Cape Otway lUht. No passengers were on board, and the crew were all saved and landed here. An enquiry is now being held The cargo was va'ue<i at .£49,000, but much h of an imperishable nature, and likely to be saved. Mr Tail's Melbourne won the Geelong Gold Cup after a splendid rare with Haricot, beating him only by half a head. Lurline was also in good form. She won the Geelong Handicap with <ase, beating a field of six, iocuding Haricot. Tha absconding Lands Office clerk, O'Farrell, has been brought back, and is before the Police Court to-day on remand. John Irvine has been committed for trial for the wilful murder of his wife at Yarraviile. After severely assaulting her he set fire to the house, and Bhe was humid to death. Dobell, a. shoemaker, who shot a man named Nicholson »t Lilly^ale, over a gambline affaif , has been committed for trial for murder. David Appenbeim and Co., merchants, have been fined £100 at the Police Court .for importing obscene photographs. A Conference of Astronomers will probably be held here abont the 22nd. A strong cricket term has been selected to proceeed to Sydney to play there early next month. The Cyphrenesjlelt San Francisco on the 7th February. A chess match between Fisher of Sydney, and Goldsmith of Melbourne, for the championship and £20, resulted last night in favor of Fisher. The score stands : —Fisher, 5; Goldsmith, 4; drawn games, 3. Dagworth hit his leg, and has been scratched for the Hobarton Cup. Breedstuffs are unchanged and dull; oats are in little inquiry. A good demand has sprung up for tinned fish, anfl sales have been maoe in advance. There/is an improved fteling in brandy, owingsfo the falling off of shipments. 7 j
