Native Affairs — Our telegrams will be found to contain an interesting account of Sir Donald Maclean's visit to the Maori King Tawhiao. The meeting between them appears to have had the effect of breaking down one of the barriers that existed between the. natives and the Government, and promises to be productive of the most satisfactory results. Good Templarism. — The Hon S.D. Hastings the head of the order of Good Templars, arrived from Auckland by the Taranaki this morning. To-morrow afternoon at 3 o'clock he will deliver an address in the Provincial Hall, the subject of which will be, " Intemperance : the Order of Good Templars specially adapted for its removal." In the evening he will preach in the Wesleyan Church. On Monday evening he will leoture in the Provincial Hall on " The organization of Good Templarism." The Rev. Charles Clark delivered last night his second lecture upon Charles Dickens and his works, and thoroughly astonished his audience by the proof he gave of his wonderful memory in reciting without pause or hesitation a long extract, that took more than a quarter of an hour in delivery, from the " Christmas Carols " Mr Clark proceeded to Picton by the Taranaki this morning, and will give a lecture at Blenheim, prior to proceeding. to Wellington.

The Howard Lodge of OddFellows. — At the usual yearly financial meeting of this lodge, the balance sheet as then lead showed a credit in the Sick and Funeral Fund of £2,620 Is 4d, and in the Management Fund of £3 12a lid. As the lodge possesses also a moiety in the OddFellows' Hall property, its total capital may be estimated at considerably over £3000. The receipts as contributions, interests, &c„ for the year just ended exceeded the disbursements, management expenses, and district levies by the sum of £170 18s Bd. Theroll now numbers 143 members. The officers installed for the ensuing terra are: — Edward Adams, G. M.; Alfred Smart, N.G.; William Burnett, V.G.; Peter Harvey, E.S.; Dr. Squires, Surgeon; and Edward Moore, Secretar7. Naval Brigade.— The first general meeting of those persons who had put down their names as members of the Port Naval Brigade took place last night at the Custom House Hotel. Mr L. Gully, who was in the chair, explained the object for which the present meeting was called, viz., to see if the company could be formed. Capt. Marshall, who was at the meeting, kindly afforded every information with regard to the formation of a Brigade, and the duties required. The number of members who have signified their intention of joining is 36. A provisional committee was formed, consisting of Messrs L. Gully, J. Infield, W. Morling, D. Burn, and E. H. Tribe, acting secretary. The secretary was instructed to report to the officer commanding the district (Capt. Marshall) thut it was intended to form a Port Naval Brigade, ond to request that he would take steps to have the company formed and their services accepted by the Government. It was proposed and carried unanimously tba^haflpfe Brigade Hall at the Port be thenead quarters of the brigade. On the company's services being accepted by the Government, the secretary was instructed to cull a meeting ior the selection of officers, &c. A vote of thanks to the chairman, and to Captain Marshall terminated the proceedings.
