WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.
Tuesday, January 5. Tbe monthly meeting was held at the Bridge Hotel. Present: Messrs Baigent (chairman), Barnicoat, Tunnicliff, Thomson, and Jordon. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, when the Overseer reported that " tbe bridge at the foot of the hill in Eve's Valley, being quite rotten and dangerous, was inspected by the Surveyor, and by his recommendation the road has been slightly diverted pending your instructions. It will, I consider, be necessary to cut a channel about 12 chains long on the south side of the Dovedale Road in Pigeon Valley where it was destroyed to prevent tbe water from crossing and recrossing the road. Tenders should be invited for the supply of horses and carts for the next six months, the former contract hiaving, expired*" ' ' , , ' Resolved, " That , the divestion of the road in Eve's Valley is approved of, and that the Overseer have the road fenced across, at the old bridge. Also that the making of the ditch in Pigeon Valley be considered at next meeting." A letter was received from the Provincial Secretary enclosing specifications made by the Motueka Valley Road Board for a part of the road from that Valley to Thorpe. The Surveyor reported that a doubt having been expressed as to the correctness of the district boundary as shown on the Waimea Board's plan, he had compared the same with the Government plan and found it correct. Resolved^ " That the misconception on the part of the Secretary of the Motueka Valley Road ' Board being removed, the Surveyor again put himself in communication with that Board with the/view. .of laying out the road between Thorpe and Stanley Brook, being in their districts." A letter was received, in reference to this road from Mr Orr, who had cut a track some years ago, suggesting some deviation from the present track. Resolved, •• That Mr Orr be thanked for bis communication, and that the Surveyor see him in reference to h suggestion." Resolved, " That with respect to the road from Pigeon Valley to Stanley Brook, and that from Thorpe to Oronoco, now awaiting the promised preliminary survey of Mr Lightfoot previous to their construction being entered on, it be respectfully suggested to the Government that iD the event of Mr Light foot's time being too fully occupied to undertake tbe proposed exploration, the public offer of a small bonus might be made to effect tbe same purpose. The following memorial, with 19 signatures, was received, "We, the undersigned ratepayers of the subdistrict of Dovedale, having learnt with regret that you have decided not to make the road round Ford's hill as at first proposed and marked out by the Overseer's direction, most respeotfully request that you will reconsider your decision, ns going round would make the road nearly level and we tbiDk taking all expenses into consideration it would be done with less expense than sufficiently easing the present road, besides having nearly a level road ever after." Resolved, " That the Surveyor preprepare plan and section of tbe two liDe3, and also ascertain what compensation will be requireJ," Another memorial from Dovedale requested that the road from the Dove crossing to "Smith's Hill should be at once formed. Resolved, " That the memorialists be informed io reply, that with every wish to comply with their request, the funds at the disposal of the Board will not warrant their undertaking this work at present." Resolved, "That the Secretary prepare and lay before the Board at its next meeting, a statement of the gross amount of rates levied and amount spent (irrespective of expenditure under the Payment of Provinces grant) in each sub-district for the current year." A letter was received from the Hon. the Minister of Public Works, in reply to a communication of September last, stating that tbe amount agreed to be paid for tbe loss of the Richmond wharf has been scheduled in favor of the Provincial Treasurer and will reach the Board in due course.
