Mr Alexander Wilson, of Auckland, has been appointed English mast'r to the High School, vice Mr Henry, resigned. Monsieur de Montalk will be French master. Auckland, Wednesday. The Macgregor will proceed to Sydney and complete her voyage. Tho outgoing mail will be taken by the City of Me bourne. The Ntw Zealanl Loan and Me cantile Agency's circular of November 17th reports tallow "at 33s 9d to 44s 6d per cwt for mutton, and 36 j to 42s 6d f,r beef; leather and hides are firmer. For preserved m - ats the demand is improved. The rates for beef show an advance of Is 4d. A speculative demand for wheat bas sprung up. A cargo afloat has been pur. hased at an improvement of 2s to 3s per quarter. New Zealand wheat, 50s per 4961b5. New Ze l.nd hemp, in common with Manilla, is exceedingly dull. Small sales bave been made at £16 10s for good clean hemp. Any rise iv value is out of the question. The agents of the A.S.N. Company here have received definite information that the present arrangements for the Californian servioe will continue for six months longer. Hugh George, man* ger of the Melbourne Argus, will probably accompany the Rev. Charles Cfark, as companion, on his. lecturing tonr. Gkahamstown, Wednesday. The Mayor haß called a public meeting to oonsider the best means for receiving the Colonial Representatives. The Friendly Societies propose to hold an united demonstration on the arrival of the volnnteers from the Sonth. Hokitika, Wednesday. The Maori has arrived from Dunedin, via Martin's Bay. Numerous applications have been made to the Provncial Government by persons desirous of taking up land undor the special settlement regulations relating to Jackson's Bay. Several applicants proceed tothe settlement by the steamer Waipar a next week. There is considerable enquiry for land in the Southern portion of the Province. . Poax Ch aimers, Wednesday. , Thomas Bassett has been arrested on suspicion of having murdered hia mate, George Aldridge, dnring a drunken Bpree. Both were fishermen in the harbor.
