Gillies ras been cfiered, and has accepted, one of the Ju^gesbip*. Judge Greuon retires on a pension in preference to leaving Christchurch. Judge Chapman retires on condition that Judge Ward i% &ot to. succeed him. A permanent Judgeship, cud an acting Judgeahip, are still vacant It is rumoured tbot Sir George Grey will stand for Auckland City West in the place of Mr. Gillies. v Napiek, Monday. Two boys, nine and eleven years old, eons of Mr. Curtis, the town bandmaster, were drowned when bathing in the Totaeknri river yesterday. The elder boy was drowned in trying to save the younger. Poet Chalmers, Tuesday. Arrived— ship Araby, 112 days from London j and the U S.S. Swatara* from Hobart Town, via Auckland Islands. Thq German P»rty there obtained views of both the ingress and egreis of Venus, and 120 photographs were taken. Dcxedtn, Tuesday. A private company has been forme 1 to construct a line, five miles in length, to connect the Bangitata coalfields with the main couth line at Balclutha. Other private railway companies are being formed.
