CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor op the 'Evening Mail.' Sir — I was annoyed on reading yesterday the very severe and unjust * remarks made by tbe Editor of the Colonist on the conduct of PoliceConstable Meredith at the late fire at Waimea Road. I beg leave to inform the public that that officer was only acting in the execution of his duty, and which duty he was particularly requested to perform by tbe Fire Inspector present at that fire — which officer, I have no doubt, will be quite willing to take the responsibility of any action taken in reference to his orders. If people will intrude where they bave no business, thereby inconvenienc- ' ing those tbat have, tbey must expect and deserve to be told their position, I am, &c, W. Cooksey. Nelson, Dec. 26, 1874.
