To the Editor of the ' Evening Mail.'
Sir— ln reply to articles appearing in your issue of last night and in this morning's Colonist, I can only say tint this is not the time for me to make any statement, nor are the columns of a newspaper a proper pla^e for a Government officer to discuss matiers in. You must know this, and I therefore cannot but remark that the strictures passed by yourself and your contemporary are both unjust and ungenerous Any further remarks upon this matter must necessarily pass uncommented upon by me. I am, &p., H, D. Jacksox, Provincial Auditor. [Mr Jackson is quite right in stating that the regulations of the Civil Service forbid a Government officer to reply to strictures passed upon him in a newsparer, but he errs gravely in supposing that the press is, on that account, prevented ffora commenting upon the actions or neglect of a public officer.— Ed. N.E.M.]
