RIFLE MATCH.
A match was fired on the 30th November . <(Sfc Andrew's Day) at 5 o'clock ia the morn- ■ tog, between ten members of the Bruce Bifles, ?■- Otago, and a like number of the Nelson City Sifles, which, resulted in a victory for the - Brace Rifles by a majority of 27 points. The ; conations were ?—At 200 yards, target 6ft Jbjr'ifi, centre 2ft square, bull's eye Bln square; at 400 and 500 yards, target 6ft by 6tf, centre 4ft by 4ft, bull's eye 2(t square; five shots at each rarige, any -position throughout. The following are the scores :—
According to the Arrow Observer, potatoes are a very scarce article in that market at present, and the price has risen to about £14 per too, the supply being limited even at that figure. Only a few months ago they could scarcely be disposed of at £3 per ton, holders being ansious to sell. One farmer had over forty tons on hand which, have been devoted to feeding pigs. This quantity would now represent a sum over £400. The Otago Times advocates the starting of 8 jam manufactory. Why on earth should we (it says) go on yesr after year selling peaches at sixpence a backetfal, and importing Tasmanian jam at an expenditure of many scores of thousands of pounds, is ooe of those puzzles that are inexplicable.
