TOWN SCHOOLS.

The prizes were distributed at the \ Provincial Hall on Saturday afternoon by hia Honor the Superintendent. Excepting of children, with whom the Hall was nearly filled, the attendance was not large. Tbe cbak was taken by Captain Rough, who eakl that of all the meetings held in the Hall during the year, that for tbe purpose of distributing the prizes was to his mind the moat interesting. To see so many healthy looking, well-dreesed, well fed children, and to know tbat in addition to those at theiCollege and Bishop's school, there were eleven hundred children receiving instruction at tbe public schools in the town alone was a real pleasure. Having been present at all the schools during the examinations he was in a position to say that they were in a very satisfactory condition, and highly creditable to the teachers. The reading bad greatly improved, the arithmetic was excellent, a knowledge of the geography of New Zealand was extending, and the writing was very good in some schools, although in others it was indifferent. . The discipline and conduct of the pupils, too, showed a marked improvement. It was (o be regretted that in some cases the attendance of tbe children was very irregular, and he would impress upon the parents the necessity of sending their children as frequently and as regularly as tbey possibly could, as, otherwise, the result was damaging to the pupils and disheartening to tbe teachers. He would now call upon his Honor the Superintendent to present the prizes, which were distributed as follows:— BRIDGE-STREET SCHOOL. — UPPER DIVISION. Fibst Class. General Proficiency— C. Halliday, 1; L. Angarde, 2, Second Class. General Proficiency— R. Louisson, 1; H. Rowe, 2. Third Class. General Proficiency — G. Harris, 1 j James Askew, 2. Special Prize for Writing— L. Augarde.
