An Auckland paper says; — A startling telegram reaches us from Dunedin, The Acclimatization Society there will liberate immediately 2,000 trout. This brings us to the Compact of 1856. The lands of the provinces includes the rivers. Now, do these lands become the property ol the province under the " Compact?" Again, should the provinces be abolished by an Act of the General Assembly, will the trout become colonial assets, aud, if so, how about the branding of the trout, and then, where is the Government brauder? The more the question comes to be considered the more it becomes involved. When the Compact was made, Acclimatisation societies did not exist in tbe colony. Still there are the trout, and there is the Compact, and the Acclimatisation Society must beheld answerable for what may happen. To remove all doubts, and set tbe public miod at rest, had the fish not better be branded before they are liberated? Theo the Compact will not be affected, should the abolition of the provinces become law. Lord aud Lady Normanby seem to have -' won golden opinions from all sorts of men*' in Queensland. The Brisbane correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald thus refers to them : — " There is a great deal oi warmth of feeliog towards his Excellency as a constitutional Governor ; while tbe joint influence of the Marchioness and himself upon society bas been of the most happy kind, and will, I hope, leave an enduring mark upon every grade which bas come within its operation. Government House for tbe last three years has practically had no 'backdoor,' while 'koolooing' has been completely out of place within its wail. A quiet, dignified, but kind and pleasant manner has pervaded the intercourse of Lord and Lady Normanby with all classes; and although they have been always accessible at all reasonable times, nobody was encouraged by the fact to take liberties." " The Loafer in the Street," who contributes to the Canterbury Press, is thus facetious : — " I'm frequently (excuse me), picked to know tbe meaning of advertisements. Now, what does this, taken from a West Coast paper mean? 'For sale, by tender, one fifth share in Collard & Co's waterrace. The 'race carries four Government Heads.' Now, I know what a water race means; but what is the con- | nection between a water raco and i Government Heads? What would they cost? What would a man do with four if he had them? I have thought deeply on this matter; and assuming that four heads were to be selected by me > tbe only conclusion J cau arrive at is that I should punch them, or sell them to some friend of mine who would thoroughly appreciate the job."
