COLLEGE SPORTS.

The annual sports which had been postponed on aocount of the weather from Thursday took place on Saturday afternoon in the College grounds in the presence of a Jarge number of visitors The most interesting contest was, of course, for the Silver Cup, which has now been offered for competition for four years, the conditions being that it should become the actual property of the winner for two consecutive years. Tbe names it already bears are those of J. Warnock, B. F. Blundell, and A. Campbell, and on the present occasion it was somewhat easily won by James Barnicoat, F. H. Richmond being a fair,. second. jj> Some of tbe principal eventfo^Qja^Saturday were open to all comers, the competitors, as a rule, being old collegians, Warnock and Blundell, 'as will be seen by the accompanying prize list, running one another very close in most instances. The younger boya displayed great pluck and endurance, especially in the mile race for youngsters under 15 years of age, which resulted almost in a dead heat between Bullard and Clouston, the former succeeding in being the first to catch the judge's eye by the veriest 1 rifle. At the conclusion of the sports the prizes were distributed by Mrs Barnicoat, for whom, as well as for the ladies who by their presence largely contributed to the spirit and success of the meeting, hearty cheers were given by the boys. These sports have now become quite an institution in # Nelson, nnd it was very encouraging to those who took part in them to find that they were so largely patronised by the public.
