The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1874.

Nelson College.— The distribution of prizes took place to-day, in the presence of a large assemblage of the parents and friends of (he pupils. A full report of the proceedings will appear in our next. The annual sports will be held in the College grounds to-morrow afternoon, commencing at one o'clock. The CifiCCS.— Notwithstanding the Bhort notice of the arrival of the circus' troupe there was a capital attendance last night. The horsemanship generally was very good, but the performances of Mdlle. Grade, " the lady with the irou teeth," were really wonderful, and the acrobatic feats of Senor Gonzaies were most cleverly performed.' The light beirj£ necessarily somewhat dim, the proprietors have gone -to the expenee of lay ing on the gasj, so that on future occasions the pavilion wijjjfe brilliantly illuminated. To-nightamong the other interesting performances wili be included Dick Turpin's ride to York. The entertainment generally is well worth a visit, aod a crowded audience will probably assemble to-night. City Sewekage. — • The following petition to the Mayor nod City Coun° cil is being sent round for signature in the town: — We, the undersigned ratepayer?, in respect of properties situate in Trafalgar, Bridge, and Hardy-streeta, id ihe Qity of NelsoD, who hold properties which have already been specially and exclusively rated for the contraction of sewerage works in the City of Nelson, have observed a notification in a public newspaper, signed by tfao Town Clerk, to ihe effect that on Friday, the 18th day of December, 1874, at a meeting of the Council to be (lien held, it will be proposed by Couucillor Burn, " That the Corporation of the City of Nelsoa do raise the sum of £2000 by loan upon the security of a special rate, not to exceed threepence in the pound upon

We hereby protest against such aura i'eing so raised upon such security, and we further protest against any such special rate being made by the Council; the ground of our protest being that the requirements of "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1867," and "The Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Act, 1871," have not been complied with in the above matter. — DaieJ at Nelson, this 11th d«y of December, 1874.
