CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Thursday, December 3. Present; Messrs Barnicoat (chairman),; Campbell, Beuke, Rout. Tartant, Cresswell, Jeaap^ercer, Broad, Buddie, hmith, Fell, I home, Holder W&stneKaud Goulstone. "^ Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. No reply having been received from Mr Roberts to the Secretary's letter and telegram of November 14th, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Eour. "That the Boards solicitors be instructed to send to Mr Roberts I forthwith the leases of the Westport sections '" taken by him in September, 1873, for his signature, and to take proceedings at once, in the event of Mr Roberts neglecting or refiufmg to execute the leases. " Two applications!!** subsidies to schools at j Uranville and Nelson Creek having been laid before the Board, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Broad, « !. That the application from Granville, together with other similar applications, be referred to the consideration of the Government, the Board having no funds wherewith to aid these schools. 2. That the Secretary lay before the Government a statement of all fresh applications for subsidies received during the current financial year. 3. That the Board is disposed to entertain favorably all such applications, whenever the funds at its dispostl will admit of its ao 4. That, in the meantime, the Secretary write to ihe applicants for full particulars, and inform them of what the Board is doing in respect of their applications." A letter was read from the master of the Brunnerton school, requesting the Board to grant him an allowance in lieu of- his house, which was about to be removed by the contractors for the Brunnerton railway, and further suggesting that the W<sleyan Chapel might be temporarily used as a sell 01-room. Resolved, on the motion ot Mr Smith, " That Mr Young be allowed house-rent at the rate of £24 per annum from January 1, 1875, and that steps be taken to ascertain if the Wesleyan Chapel at; Brunnerton can be, temporarily occupied as a school-room, and at what rent." Mr Cress well's motion for reducing the salary of the master of the Foxhill school by £20 per annum, with the view of increasing the stipend of the master of the Dovedaie school by a like amount, was negatived. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Tarkant, "That £65 be- granted to the Lower Moutere Committee for making a brick addition to the school-room, and for necessary desks and forms." Resolved, on .the motion of Mr R. Smith, T> That a fee ? f two £ umeaa be allowed to the Rev. F. C. Simmons, one of the examiners for the Provincial Scholarships." Resolved, " That the Secretary communicate with the chairman of the Motueka Committee as to the future employment of a second assistant, the average daily attendance for the last two quarters having been only sixty-two."
