Mr Chtdwick reports of the stock market, as follow*:— Store cows, In low condition, j£4 10s to £6; store heifers, three-years-ild, £5; two year store, £3 3s to £3 10'; calres, £l 10s; young fat steers, £6; ditto cowb, £10; good hacks, £15 to £20; ordinary, £8 to £15. No draught stock in hand. Dottedin, Monday. The -weather has been splendid for the races to-day. There was a large attendance. Mr H. Goarley's Kildare being the only horse entered for the Hurdle Race he walked orer. For the Maiden Plate, King Phillip, 1 ; Mi-s Alfred, 2; Miss King 3. Betting- 3 to lon the favorite After one break away a start ■was made, all getting away together except May Queen, who reared up at the post, thus losing 301 yards- Passing the Stand the first time, Lady Glasgow lei, Kin< Phillip, hard held, heading the other* This posii ion was kept' for a quarter of a mile, when Miss Alfred took the first place, King Phillip gradually ceeping np and Lady Glajgow falling back, and although Mist Alfred did her utmost. King Phillip won easily by half a length. Time, 2 mins. 31} sees , being the slowest the Maiden Plate was ever run in o j the Forbury course. St. Andrew's Handicap : Mr Goodman's Kathleen, 1 ; Mr Cotton's Envy, 2; Mr Nelme's Faugh-a-Ballagb, 3. Mabel, who started at level betting, was left behind at the start, and never got within 200 yards of the other horses. Kathleen led on . passing the stand the first time, and after going three-quarters of a mile Kathleen and Envy drew themselves away from the other horses, and had the race all to themselves. Kathleen then won a good race by half a length. The Dunedin Selling Race was won easily by Miss King. Spring Handicap : Captain Hutcbinson's Mabel, 1; Mr Goodman 1 * Verbena, 2 ; Mr Coombe's Right . Bower, 3. Betting even on Mabel, 3to 2 against Envy and Verbena 2to 1 against Eight Bower. Verbena led past the stand, with Envy second, Eight Bower third, and Mabel fourth. The last named then came up, and, after a bit of a set-to with Verbena, won as she like! by half a length, amidst loud yells and hisses. Time, 2 mine. 1 0£ Bees. Tuesday. Meyers & Cob store*, at Lawrence, took fire last night and the house and stock were partially destroyed. The building and ttock were worth £1400, and were insured in the Victoria for £550, snd the Soath British for £200. Auckxakd, Monday. Cecelia Allan, a yonng girl in service of Mr Howard at the North Shore, whose house was burned on Friday, has been arrested on a charge of arson The circumstances seem an indication that the girl was afflicted with a mania for incendiarism. The house had caught fire several times, and on the last occasion a nv»n who was passing went in and found the girl removing the furniture out of the way of the flames. The fire then got sneb a hold that it wai impossible to extinguish it Messrs Henderson an! Macfarlanc have purchased the brigantine Kyno, which will be employed as a Sooth Sea trader. Mr Sterndale, who wrote several articles on the Polynesian trade in connection with Mr Vogel'a scheme, accompanies the vessel.
