RIFLE MATCH.
A match between the Waimea and Stoke Rifles was fired at Stoke on Saturday. The scores made by the former were scarcely such as might have beeu expected of a company that has hitherto been able to hold ita ground agaiust all comers, while those of the latter, with two exceptions, were remarkably good. The day was fine, with a Bteady breeze and clear sky. The following are the scores : —

A young reprobate — an English mill-girl, lately imported — was before the Resident Magistrate's Court, in Dunediu, a few days ago. Her name was Rebecca Steward, and she was charged with having no visible means of support. She at first indignantly denied the statement made concerniug her by the detective; but as the case proceeded, her real character beg.-in to disclose itself. His Worship, in a tone of voice plainly implyiog that he considered the money bndly spent, told her that she probably had cost the colony £15 or £16 to bring her out, nnd that she ought to go to service. The woman, however, thought differently, for sho emphatically replied that it was not her intention to go to service any more. She hud tried it ouce, and the result was not satisfactory, us her mistress bad not paid her her wages, and she was aleo told that she was not worth her meat. She could work in a mill, and was informed before leaving home that there were plenty of mills here ; — but no more service for her. She also gave it as her opinion that there was not such n thing as a good mistress in the colooy.
