CANTERBURY RACES.
The following descriptions of the principal events at the late Canterbury meeting are from the Christchurch papers :— Debut. Stakes of 150 says, added to a sweerstakts of 10 soys each, h ft. Colts, fat 10:bs; fillirs and geldings, Sst slba. Distance, one and a half miles. Closed with 41 subs. Mr P. Campbell's b c Tadmor, Bst lOlbs, by Caledon— Brunnetle ... (R. Ra\) fl Mr H. Redwood's eh f Raogi. 8-t s*bs, by Ravenswo/th-Skybird (J. M'GJasban) f 2 Somnambu'a, Belle, Wainui, and two others started. Betting— Even on Wainui- 3 tol against Rangi and £ onnambula ; 3 to 1 against Traduccr; 10 to I against the others. A splendid start waa made without any delay at the post; the Emmeline Colt at once going to the front, Sonnambula in close attendance, Rangi and the Ada colt being the next two. They ran in this order all up the back of the course, Sonnambula going to the front at the three-quarter mile post; she held the lead to round the turn when Tadmor and Rangi came with a rush, and took up the ! running for hoa c, both Ray and M'Glashsn riding their horses from the distant- c post, and racing neck-snd neck to the finish, both passing the j dg^'s chair togethtr, aod resulting in a dead he it. Sannamhula was several lengths behind: Wainui, nowhere. Time— 2min. 50aec. For the deciding heat, Mr Packer, who acted as starter for the Derby, hud no difficulty to get them away ; Tadmor, directly the fl»g fell, rushed to the lead, which he only held lor a short distance, when R»ngi went to the front, Tadmor waiting behind At the three-quarter-mile post Bob Ray began to send Tadmor along, and s*>on had a commanding lead, which he maintained a I 'he way, winning as he like!, hard held, MGlashan riding the fillly out to the fi lish. Time— 2min. 53secs. Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, of 200 soys, added to a sweepstake* of 10 soys each, hft for acceptors. Entrance, 5 soys, to go to the fund. Distance, two miles. Mr D. O'Brien's b g Tamburini, aged, 9st 9lbs, by Towton- Opera (Owner) 1 Mr S. Noswcthy's b c Traitor, 4 yrs, 7st lOlbs, oarried 7st 1 3lbs ... (Cotton) 2 Mr F. W. Delamain's b c Temp'et-n, 4 vrs, Bst ( J Hughes) 3 Mr M. Studholme's b c by Caledon—Z'gzag, 3 yrs, 6st 9lbs ... (Smith) 0 Betting — Even on Traitor and Templeton, 4 to 1 against Tamburini. After one false start, Mr Campbell sent them away, Tenipleton at once rushing to the front, going past the stand at a great pace. Tamburini being second and Traitor thirl, Zigzag colt bringing up the rear. This order of running was maintained till the mile and a half post was reached, whenTraitorchanged places with Tamburini, and went up the long reach close on Templeton's quarters, Tamburini lying about four lengths l ehind. On the corner for home Tarn began to go up to his h"rses, and getting on even terms, raced with them for a shott distance, wh-mh . assumed a commanding lead, winning hard held by two length*, Traitor beating Templeton by the same distance for secon i place. Time, 3mins 48secs. Canterbury Cup, of 250 soys, addel to a sweepstake of 15 soys each; 5 soys forfeit; second horse to save his stake. Two-miles-weigbts-for-age. Distance, two and a quarter miles. MrD. O'Brien's b g Tamburini—Towton — Opera, aged, 9st I libs (Owner) 1 Mr S. Nosworthy's b c Tr.iitor, 4 yrs, Bst 12 lbs (Ray) 2 Mr F. W. Delamain's b c Temp'eton, 4 4 yrs, Bst 12lbs (Hames) 3 Mr Redwood's b f Toi, 3 yrs, 6sc 13 bs (A.Lyford) 0 Mr P. Campbell's eh f Sonnambula, 3 yrs 6stl3lbs ... . ... (Smith) 0 Betting — 2 to 1 against Tarn 6to 1 against the others. Tarn was quickest on his legs, but Templeton was not to be denied and went at once to the front, followed by Sonnambula, Tarn lying third. Traitor and Toi two lengths behind. In this order they passed the stand. From this to the mile-post Templeton, as usual, made all the running, with Sonnambula still in company, Tarn waiting about a length behind. Sonnambula now pulle i off, and Traitor went up. The three went together for a few hundred yards when Templeton was in difficulties, and at the last turn it was clear that it was tither Tarn or Traitor for it. The two ran head and head to the distance post, where Ray was riding Traitor. From this home the favorite had decidedly the best of it, winning by threequarters of a length, Trait >r second, Templeton a very moderate third. Toi wus quite outpaced, and was not persevered with. Time, 4 mins 16 sees. Christchurch Plate, of 150 soys, added to aswepsfakes of 5 soys each. Entrance, 5 soys, to go to the funds. Distance, two miles. Mr Redwood's c f Ngaro, by Ravensworth — < ountess, 3 yrs, 6st Blbs (A. Lyford) 1 Mr .«*. Nosworthy's b c Traitor, 4 yrs, Bsfe 21b3 (carried Bst 6 Jibs) ... (R.Ray) 2 Mr D. O'Brien's b g Tamburini, aged, lOst Ulbs (Owner) 3 Betting— s to 4on Traitor; 3to 2 against Ngaro, 2 to I against Tamburini. At the fall ot the flag all were away together, Trailer leading past the stand by a couple of lengths, Ngaro lying second, and Tarn three lengths behind Mr Redwood's mare. No change in this or. ler of running was made till between the mile and a half and the mile post, when Ngaro went up an I raced with the leader some few hundred yards, the favorite again goiog to the front till nearing the turn for home, when the filly weot ahead and led by about ball a length. Cjming down the straight, Bob was riding Traitor, aod the filly running all over the course. On entering the rains, both were neck-and-neck, the filly just contriving to catch th? judge's eye first by a short head, Tarn being outpaced with the weight on his back. Time, Jmin 39«ecs.
