Utterly disgusted with the apathy of the Superintendent, nnd alarmed at the recent strange and unprecedented conduct of the Provincial Secretary, a number of tbe citizens of Neleon havo determined to endeavour to obtain an appeal tothe reprea.Dt-tivesof tbepeople. They have therelore drawn up a petition tv bis -Honor tbe Superintendent asking bim to summon a special meeting of the Provincial Council without delay. The text'of tbe petition, which will be dis tribuied throughout tbe whole province for signature, is as follows: — '* We the undersigned, inhabitants uf the province of Nelson, being dissatisfied with the present administration of the the affairs ef / t_fe'-j>rovioce, respectfully request tbat your Honor will .ummon a special meeiiug of the Provincial Council t<» consider tbe working of the existiti;? Executive Goverhmeat Act." A largo number pt. signatures, we are informed, have' fclready been obtained in thetowc.
Action fos Falsk Imprisonment. —We understand tbat Mr O'Conor bas
paid £5 into Court, on account of the action brought against him by Mr Knyvett for damages. Tbis, of course, means an admission of bis error. We have not yet bearrf whether tbe offer will be accepted. Kntvett v. O'Conor. — We are glad to receive from our contemporary, a full admission that when he undertook to controvert our statement the other day, and to give what professed to be the " correct version," he did so in complete ignorance of the real facts of tbe case. Perhaps be will be more cautious for the future. Deafneso. — Mr Haonaford, of Auckland, advertises a preparation for tbe cure of deafness. He has several testimonials with regard to its efficacy. Nelson Variety Troupe. — An entertainment, for whicb an excellent programme is published, will be given by tbe members of this troupe at the Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening next. Kecha bites.*— We learn that a Tent of tbe above Order is to bo instituted in Nelson on Tuesday evening next by tbe Rev. W. Shirriffs, of Blenheim. Good Templars. — There was a large attendance of members at the Loyal Nelson Lod^e last evening, when eight new members were initiated, and one admi-ted by card. It was resolved to bave a Good Templar tea and public meeting on Wednesday next, when the delegates from the different lodges in tbe two provinces of Nelson and Marlborough will be in attendance for the purpose of forming a Provisional Grand Lodg<* for the above provinces, whicb is to be instituted on th.t day. Bro. J. S. Jones was appointed as delegate from the Loyal Nelson Lodge, and Bro. W. Akersten will represent^ tbe Loyal Marine Lodge at the Port.— The Richmond Progressive Lodge met in thß Agricultural H>»ll on Thursday evening last, all the officers present, aud ten candidates were initiated members of the Order. Tbis lodge is likely to do much good in the district of Waimea East. Bro. C. Say well was elected delegate to attend the meeting to be held in Neleon on Wednesday next.
