SENDING THEM TO THE DEVIL'S GRIP.
To the Editor of the ' Evening Mail.' Sie—A paragraph appeared in a recent issue of the Colonist that I think should no longer be allowed to pass unnoticed, as it has a very misleading and mischievous tendency,—l refer to tbe statement that it was pro* bable that a portion of the emigrants would be located at the township of tbe Howard to work on the roads three duys in the week, and on their land tbe other three. Many of your readers may not be aware, perhaps-, that this township of the Howard ie situated near the Devil's Grip, at the lower end of the plaiu occu pied,by Mr. John Kerr, M.P.C, as a sheep-run, which is about ali that it is fit ior. Why the paragraph .hould have been writen I cannot imugine, unless indeed it was to bolster up the Devil's Grip road-making arrangement, or intended for a bit of sarcasm, Tbat anyone could suppose lhat the Government eutertained auy idea of locating emigrants in any such locality I cannot for a moment couceive ; for supposing the land was of the best description instead of the worst, what chance is there of successful settlement on town sections of half-an-acre eacb, and the surrounding country all occupied ? I am, &c, \ A.B.
