Good Templars. — A meeting for tbe purpose of instituting a new lodge will be held at Waimea West on Thursday evening next. Telegraphic communication is stopped with all stations south of Blenheim. The English and Australian telegrams brought to Greymouth by the Zephyr, should have appeared in yesterday's issue, but were shut out by the lengthy report of tbe proceedings in the Resident Magistrate's Court. — 1 — ■ the Degree meeting will not be held to-morrow evening. Mr Richmond at Stoke. — Mr Richmond met the electors at Stoke last night, Mr Rout in the chair. The address was similar to that delivered at Richmond. At its conclusion a few questions were asked, and the following resolution was, on the motion of Mr Rowbotham, unanimously agreed to : — " That iu tbe opinion of this meeting it ie not desirable to alter our present Provincial institutions, until we know more about the system proposed to be substituted, but that the electors desire to record their confidence in Mr Richmond as tbeir representative." In commenting upon Mr Simmons' late letter in reply to an article in the Otago Daily Times which claimed for that province tbe first place in New Zealand from an educational point of view, the Westport Times says :— The quiet triumph of the Rev. Mr Simmons is the more complete from tbe fact that he once was the Rector of the Dunedin High School, that under bis control it flourished, and that since his departure it has gradually fallen until very low in public esteem. His retirement from Dunedin was also caused by tbe operation of a too close conservatism which is the chief defect in the Otago educational system. He had, in friendly correspondence, imparted to a friend in Scotland, the Bishop of one, of "the Scottish sees, his opinions on clerical men and manners coining under his notice, and did not write in flattering terms of the Presbyterian system. The letter wt* unwittingly published, and in course of time, a too zealous adherent of (he Presbyterian body brought the letter before public notice in Dunedin. Good taste, gentlemanly forbearance, and Christian charity did not then prevail. The Presbyterian clergy waxed indignant, and in their bitterness flaunted some of tbe foulest and time debased rags of intolerance. For months the papers teemed with correspondence, fulmiuations were hurled from tbe pulpits, aud the bitterness evoked was .very, . strong indeed. Explanation or calm reasoning was of no avail, the insulted clerical brethren of the kirk inclined rather to stone the prophet than to forgive, and be who bad unwittingly raised the huriy burly found it expedient, for his own peace of mind, to retire from tbe scene. What Otago lost Nelson then won. The too preponderant influence of a certain section of tbe Otago community still militates against the perfect success of her educational system. In Nelson Province a healthy catholicity of freedom from sectarian influence prevails, education expands, and from his seat iu the Nelson - College the erstwhile Rector of the Dunedin High School can remind his Otago friends of a familiar Trollopean admonition. A curious find was recently made at Ararat, Victoria, by a saw-miller — nothing less than, an old horse-shoe embedded in the heart of a solid log of green wood that was in course of conversion into planks. It is supposed that the shoe when cast fell round a sapliog and " grew in." It had risen with the growth of the tree to a height of about five feet from Ibe ground. The Napier Daily Telegraph says:— "'Sir James Fergusson, it is reported, has been offered by Mr Disraeli, tbe post of Secretary for India, and intends, on returning home, lo accept the position. From tbe tenor of bis Excellency's speech at tbe Parliamentary banquet the truth of the report is dubious." . Tbe balance sheet of the Guardian Newspaper Company, lately published, shows debtor .£10,911 10s sd, creditor £9120 10a 10d, or a debit of £1190 19s 7d on the firßt year's transactions. ; Very, very blonde hair is now called " the light fantastic tow."
