eaaxAYUAaA;.: /rrry—A-. . i take the following account of a simple i poWpiß^niac'bine irom the Queens \ fonder of a recent dates — "What

looks like a simple and efficient contrivance for pumping water or similar employment has been set to work upon tho Launceston and Western railway, raising water from the river lo the top of a viaduct. The pump in use is an ordinary force and suction pump, and formerly was worked by two men with a handle in the same way. The work was, however, found to be very heavy, until one of the overseers erected a very simple machine, which is worked with ease by a boy, and enables a continuous stream of water to be kept up. A moving iron bar was placed j between two supports, having at one end a short iron arm, to which the piston rod of the pump is attached. 'From the other end of the bar a huge log of timber is suspended, aud thus the pump is kept going by the log being made to oscillate like the pendulum of a clock. A little 'boy, about ten years of age, attends the machine, ani so great is the leverage obtained by the contrivance that he can easily work it. The novel machine is a great attraction to pagsefra-by, apd many a; traveller by the r.oad; stops; to pump a bit, merely for the sake of understanding the ingenious idea." Alfred Tennyson, the poet- laureate who is getting very infirm beneath the the weight of years, has a,t length determined to give the people a cheap edition of bis works in ten monthly balf-orown volumes. The first of theße, containing his earliest poems, has already appeared. Tennyson and Tupper are in a pecuniary sense two of the most fortunate of England's poets, and yet in point of poetic merit are separated by a great golf. Tennyson won success at a guinea a line, and gave the • aristtcracy their money's worth, whilst Tupper's mediocre muse won the same wage by puny imitations of the grandson of Jessie in hexameters.
