"'After referring to local .subjects, he ''sajdltbat he had voted for the increased honorarium because no man could afford to leave ihis bonnets for a less sum. He thought the. .colony wouUi get the value of its .money in ~ public works. Notwithstanding the number ' oi immigrants pouring into the colony, the cry was still for more. As. Mr. Reeves had said, .the Taianaki members did, not represent the feeling of, tb? people of that province, he wished them to pass a resolution expressing 'tbeir opinion upon tbe point (continued cheering). :He compared the position of Auckland -with tbat of Otago and Canterbury, and .pointed out why tbe latter 'provinces should rial be abolished. He said that the. Public Works scheme meant the ultimate extinction of the provinces, but as long aa the provinces had the money to take part in the settlement of the land, they would continoe^o exist. In snswer to a question, he safd^hat the Ministry's •scheme was central government. The following resolutions ■ were then carried unanimously; only-one hand being held np againct them:—-"(l.) That this meeting is -ot- opinion that Mr. Vogel'a resolutions proposing the abolition of the provinces of the North Island, and substituting in their place a form of government really local in its nature, are wise, Statesmanlike, and deserving of hearty support. (2.) That tbe land fund .of !to several provinces should continue to be, as^ tar as -practicable, localised. (3.) Tbat -this meeting does not desire to see tbe land -fund bf the Southern provinces taken for expenditure in the North Island, > ut, on tbe contrary, wishes to see it applied locally to it* legitimate parpose of opening up and peo- - plibg the country." Mr. Stsndish, a member rof the Provincial Executive, moved au amendment' to the first resolution, to the effect — i H That;thia meeting reserves its expression of iopinion aa to Major Atkinson's action re the 'provincial changes, until it is in a better •pOßitibn to judge of the question ;" but the amendment did not find a seconder.
