Present: Messrs Barnicoat (Chair man), Campbell, Garin, Broad, Mercer, Goulstone, BuddieiCreawell, Wastney^ Fell, Beuke, Thorpe, Martin, Bishop of Neieon, Rout, Wigzell, Holder, Talbot, and R. Smith. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Broad having moved that the report of ibe committee appointed to consider the question of augmentation be adopted, Mr Wabtney moved as an amendment, "That the system of augmentation be abolished, and that the Board, after Ist January next, revert to tbe system of fixed salaries for teachers, as formerly adoptod." Tbe amendment was lost on a division. Ayes 6 : Messrs Wastney, CreaaweU, Mercer, Buddie, Martin, Campbell. Noes 9: Messrs Broad, Thorpe, Fell, Talbot, Bishop of Nelson, Beuke, ; Holder, Garin, and Goulstone (with an explanation). Resolved, on the motion of the Bishop of Nblson, "That the resolutions embodied the report, with certain alteration!, as follows, be adopted :— 1. That the system of augmentations is in itself fair and expedient, and affords an incentive to, and reward for, the energetic performance of their duties on the part of the. teachers. 2. That augmentations, in the opinion of the Board, should depend upon the result of examination, and should aUo have reference to the number of children in attendance, but that until the necessary arrangements can be made to render it dependent on both examination and attendance." it be paidfWith reference to the latter solely. ... x ->\\ 3. That the principle just laid dowrvW heretofore applied to only the head-teachers ißh-each school, should be extended to the assistant teachers, and that augmentation in all cases of new appointments of h-ad-teachera not at present so engaged be divided between the head teachers and the assistants in the following ratios : — v Wherc^jme assistant is empfoyedV twothirds to go to the head-teache^kand one-third to the assistant. Where two assistants are employed, threefifths to go to the head-teacher, sixtenths of the remaining two-fifths, to the second, and four-tenths to the third tacher. . 4. That until the new principle comes into operation, the salary of the assistant teacher in Hampden«street school be increased by £12 per annum; that of the senior assistant at Haven-road by £20; and thatSif the junior assistant hy £7. IP 5. That no alteration be made in the salary of the mistress of the Preparatory School, but that the salary of her assistant be increased bp £9 per annum. «• "*6. That the above changes date from Ist 'September, 1874." Resolved, on the motion of Mr Rout, " That the payment of a subsidy to Mr Metcalfe at the Lyell, be withheld until the Board is fully satisfied that the usual condition as to the providing of a suitable building and the appointment of a committee of management have been complied with, and that |the secretary inform Mr Metcalfe at once of this resolution. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Wigzell, "That the further consideration of Mr Roberts' \ase s be def<rred until next meeting; iris oWer to give him an opportunity of 'a^ain communicating with the Board. \ Resolved, on the motion of the BiSHOP^pF Nelson, "That with reference to the report of the Commission appointed to enquire as to the manner in which the education rate has been collected in the City of' Nelson, the Secretary convey to the Provincial Government tbe thanks of the Board for the step that they have taken to ensure a better collection of the rate in future." Resolved, on the motion of Mr Cbessyvell, "That £3 10e be allowed 'to the Stoke Committee to enable them to substitute iron for shingles in repairing the roof of the master's house. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Holder, " That the salary of the master of Foxhill school be increased from £60 to £100, such increase to date from Oct. 1, 1874." Notices op Motion. The following notices of motion were then given :-— . 1.
