Wellington, Friday. Mr Walter Turnbull has intimated to the Governors of Wellington College his intention to endow the College in perpetuity with £1000 for forming scholarships and prizes. He suggests that it be appropriated to scholarships of £25 each, open to matriculated students of New Zealand University attending Wellington College, aud two annual prizes of £15 and £10 to be given at tbe annual examination, the first to the most proficient in all branches of education, and the second to the most proficient in mathematics and natural science. Saturday. Mr J. T. William., the Registrar-General, and Judge Weetou have been holding an inquiry into certain charges of defalcations made against an officer in the Stamp Depart* ment. The inquiry has just concluded, and it is understood that the result is that no foundation whatever exists for making such charges. - - Chribtchubch, Friday. At a meeting of cricketers last night to con. ider the proposed visit of the Victoria' eleven, there was an influential attendance and the project waß warmly approved of. A Committee was appointed to obtain particulars of the probable exp_n_.s, to aee. wh.t subscriptions could be obtained, .and to confer with the Dunedin cricketers on the matter. A meeting was held last night to consider the question of chartering a vessel to convey passengers to the Palmer Goldflelds, Queensland. There was a very large attendance, and guarantees were given for fifty passengers should the vessel be obtained on reasonable terms. A Committee was appointed to make complete inquiries into the matter. Saturday. ' The following are tbe latest quotations: — Wheat, 5s to 5s 3d; cats, 5s 6d; barley, none; flour, £12 to £13; bran, £6; sharps, £6 to £7; cheese, 8d; hams and bacon, uncovered, 9|d; bams, alone, Is; millers stocks o' wheat are low; oats exceedingly scarce, and the demand more than equ .1 to tho supply. It is believed that the stocks will scarcely be equal to local requirements. Auckland, Saturday. Mr Alexander Saunders reports sales of Bank of New Zealand shares at £17 1 7s 6d; i National Bank, 70s; South British, 51s 6d. Buyers: Crown. Prince, 105, 6d: Royal Oak, 2s 6d. Sellers: Fiji Bank, 555; Thames, 40s ; Caledonian, £8 As. Mr Alex. Saundera reports sales of Steam ' Packet, £3 15s; City of London, 23s 3d. Buyers— Bank of New Zealand, £17 15s ; South British, 60s; Crown Prince, lis 6d. . Sellers'— National Insurance, 30s; Fiji' Bank, 545; Long Drive, £6. Bluff, Sept, 26. The Albion with the English mail left j Melbourne at 6 p.m. on the 2 1st, and arrived ! at the Bluff at 8 a.r_. to-lay, after a quick run of four days twelve hours. She brings 37 saloon, and 27 steerage passengers, and 300 tons of cargo for all ports/ She sails for Dunedin at 4 p.m.
