The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1874.

\Nblson Horticdltubal Societt. • -—-We call attention to the advertisement that apjpeaxa..in the fourth psge ;. of tpday'si«Wnn which will be found the list apprizes to be offered for com- , .^petition at the Sbowf to be held on the ' - 26th of November and!Jsth of March next. ; [•'^ \ THB^Pararua arrived from Melbourne ' been unable m to communicate with the shore either ,; at Hokitika of Greymouth, owing to the *\ Tough state of: the bar. She met the v^NQtago near the .Sandspit, and trans- * snipped her^WeTsf Coast mails and pas- ■"■ sengers, but bajd to bring the cargo oh " toNelaoD. She sails for Wellington this evening. -, Artillert Entertainment.—lt is . necessary to remind our • readers tbat tbe entertainment which '^|ia^ed off so successfully on T/besday "I] "even;ng: will be repeated to-night. ,/i'j Tho's'e who were not present on the previous occasion we recommend to '"••"'attend to-nigbi; (hose who were there will require no snch recommendation. mn .'tW :6i¥ e •lery N gtad to.learn that Mr* Gully has received an invitation from his Excellency the Governor to accom- • pany him in bis trip to the Sounds on tbe West Coast of tbis Island. Through / * the;'medium of Mr Gulr/sjjjtowerful '^'-pencil, we may hope in course of lime to be made familiar with (he magoiO--.j].cent scenery off tbat part of New Zealand. The trip, we understand, is „* likely to occupy abont a fortnight. '; ' Short Horn fCATCLBj^An adver- :'/. tisemen t appears in our^Sortrnins to-day '„, offeriog for sale three pure bred shortri horn balls ,fronjyine herd of Messrs • Leoey and Son, "Kent, England. Tbe ; 'value of these animals may be estimated by. the fact that the'y formed a portion y of''a 'herd of forty-one head of cattle which were sold in July last, and averaged tbe sum of £221 per bead. "tMessra Leney commenced to breed shorthorns in 1859, and bave ever •v ' since been improving the quality of their stock,; but, as the London Telegraph says, on tbe day of tbe sale they received their reward. The most .extraordinary sale effected during tbe *' ,' day, was that of a heifer calf, eight months old, which realised tbe ii;; prodigious sum of 2000J guineas. It would be well worth the consideration of our farmers whether it woold not Le .desirable to co-operate in tbe purchaee '%i v one of these bulls now offered for 7J: tile. The breetf* of cattle in tbe

Waimeas is capable of much improvement, and if ;a few of those interested w^re to combjne they might at no very great individual cost secure io themselves and the district ono of the best &r,ed bulls ever offered for sale in New Zealand. We commend this matter specially to the notice of tha^ useful association, the Stoke Farmers' Club. Volunteer Regulations. — - The priucipal alterations in the Rales and* Regulations for Volunteers? are :-— (l.) k Reducing the minimum of a corps to 30 instead of 36, . and making tbe maximum of all corps 100. In --Anderson's claim, Inangahuo, otushiag^ le, proceeding steadily, the machinery working very satisfactorily since Hie rece'Dt alterations were completed. -Unless some unexpected occurrence takes place, the batteries will be kept constantly going until Christmas. It is not yet decided when a thorough cleaning up will take place. vStonei is being obtained from the middle and main levels and from five e topee. We are glad to be in a position to state tbat the stone is of good average quality, and that shareholders may now v look forward to tbe receipt at no distant date of regular dividends.
