The Cyphrenet has undergone a thorough refit during her stay in port. Sbe has left lor Newcastle to coal, ani on her return trip will take cargo, &c, for San Francisco. She leaves with the mails for England on the 26tb inst. Her substitution for the City of Adelaide is io every sense advantageous. Mr Russell is anxiously looked for both in this colony and Victoria The Mikado left San Francisco to date on the IStb. Melbourne, September 17. The Commodore, in reporting on the Victorian Naval Training system, approves of it. After strong opposition the Tariff Bill for increasing duties on some articles from 10 to 20 per cent, was carried. The Chnrch Assembly has met. The Bishop reported that there were 42 con?ecrated churches, and 186 . unconsecrated, making, with other bpildinga, a total of 403 places of worship. £4500 has been offered for Goldsborough. Tasmania, September 17. \ youth of sixteen has been sentenced to death for committing a rape on a woman of seventy-three. More failures aro reported in Launeeston. In the estate of White, Mills and Co, the direct labilities are £12,000 to £13,000, and the contingent liabilities £25,000 io £30,000. 1 The only available assets amount to about j £3iioo. The firm! was indebted to Peters, Bard and Co £34,000 for accommodation bills
