The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1874.

Football Match.-— An interesting match will be played to-morrow afternoon at the Botanical Gardens between the members of tbe Nelson Football Club and a team of the officers and men of H.MS. Blanche. The game, which will be the closing one of the season, will commence a. three o'clock, and an exciting contest is anticipated. His Worship ihe Mayor entertained the members of the City Council at dinner at his bouse on Wednesday evening. There were also present — Sir D. Monro, the Hon. T. Renwick, tbe Hon. N. Edwards, Lowther Broad, Esq., R.M., A. Pitt, Esq. (Provincial Solicitor;, A. Adams, Esq.. and Dr. Squires. Agricultural Association. — A meeting of the members of this Association will be held at seven o'clock tomorrow evening, at the Star and Garter Hotel, for tbe purpcse of making arrangements for holding the annual ram show.\ Christ §hurch. — The Church Messenger says:— -A design for a new parsonage is under consideration by tbe vestry; it will cost at least £700 or . -"£BOO, and for such a necessary object, the members of the church wiil make special effort. It is most inconvenient, and a departure from the undertaking given to Mr Leighton, that there should be any longer delay in providing a bouse. Tbe subscriptions also must not be on tbe scale of small contributions to a Sunday-school picnic or a treat /but worthy of tbe occasion and necessity.; ought not the Cathedral Church oft Nelson, which has an unrivalled position as to site, to have as \ good a parsonage. Both the clergymen ' of Nelson ought to be able to receive tbeir own people and strangers with moderate accommodation at least. Things have been allowed to drift so long, that it is inofe difficult than it .need bave been, but we do trust that Christ Church will not be the only place in the wbole diocese which has not provided a parsonage for its clergyman. One way to do it would be to bave a graduated list of subscriptions, aud get one list paid-up for the first year of £300, and the successive years would be less — " 1874 1875 1876 1877 £300 £<_U0 £100 £100 and surely SO gentlemen could be found who would guarantee tbe pavment of the sums in 1875, 1876, and 1877, while a subscription list spread over a period would enable all parties to contribute. It ought to be done easily. All honor to ladies wbo self-denyingly collect, but on tbis occasion we think tbe whole district might be divided and canvassed by gentlemen as a matter of business. Tbe clergymen of Nelson Are both of them called upon to help in tbe couotry districts, and the country folk avail themselves of their being in Nelson to visit and consult tbem, and they may therefore be expected to help in this matter. The progress made in agricultural operations in the bush-covered country of Westland is indicated by the fact, than an Agricultural {Society has been formed in Hokitika, under whose auspices a ploughing match is shortly to be held.
