WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.

y i Tuesday, September 1 . ' The Board met at the Bridge Hotel. Present : Messrs Baigent, Barnicoat, Thotqpßon; Tonniolitf, and Jordan. S^.^fft ll^ 9 ;'?- 7 - , V Bt meeting were read and confirmed. The Overseer reported as follows: — Mr 4. packer'*? contract, of £55 2s 6d for carting^ravel from . the Richmond pit is comiWled. The bridge in Trass's Valley * : ifas been re-erected, costing _e4;fil^ In Hammond's Valley tbe Board'? quota to work done there amounts to £8 18s, and that on the by-road to Mount Hesling ton to £i 16s. Gravelling in Ef^htly-eight Valley, done by Mr John vVtfifsWortb, cog t £fr 18s. The gravelling^t Hope Ihave let to Mr Webby at 18s per chain, the Board being liable for only the one-half, the contractor engaging to collect the other moiety from residents in the neighborhood. Tbe deviation of road'ai Ford's Hill, Dovedale, is eleven and a half chains long, aod one and a half chains from the present road, being five and a half chains in Mr .'Morrison's section, and sir in Mr Mercer's; both parties aro agreea'ble to the alteration, but cannot state .the amount of compensation required until ihey have examined the line. There has been great damage j done to the new road io Pigeon Valley, about thirty chains in No. 5 contract have been destroyed, and tbe bridge washed away in No. 1. I have expended; a sum of j£ll in urgent repairs. Tbat portion washed away appears tol be the bed of the stream, a road might be made, say 18ft. wide, by securing logs on eacb side and filling between/ with gravel. I should also recommend from the experience of last flood that tbe following alterations in the bridges in No. 6 contract be made instead of 10ft. and 6ft. waterways, . tbat they be respectively 18ft. and 14ft., and the piles ' to be let into sills ; the contractors tender for this work is £13. I have examined the corduroying done by Mr Tunnicliff, in Trass's Valley ; it is 10 chains long by 15ft. wide. On tba Quail Valley road, Mr Holland wishes r to bring before your notice the desirability of bridging the Pretty. Bridge stream in lieu of filling up the/ approach on the west baok, as he ii afraid great damage wili be done to fa i_ property f by so doing The amouo asked by Mr Rout for gravel take, / from his paddock is 6d. per yard i: i lien of the Board filling and levellinj the pit as before agreed upon, at thi same .time if there should be anyl sqrpios read parings on the line of gravelling tbey are to be brought back by the empty carts. Resolved, "That the fnrther consideration of tbe alteration of the road in Dovedale be postponed till receipt of claims for coir pen sat ion; that a fordway be made in No. 3 contract, Pigeon Valley,., .where tbe bridge has been washed away; that a subsequent tender of £10 for alteration in No. 6 contract be accepted; and that tbe repairs of of other damage done be postponed nntil examined by tbe Chairman apd Overseer, and also the road to Quail Valley by Mr Holland's. Resolved, "That £10 be paid as an equivalent to Mr Tunnicliff's contribution to the work in Trass's Valley. J. o?GonneU's tender for collecting and breaking road metal at 3s 9d and § Bt M 9fi*J<**s Wfl s accepted. I^The^follo.wing memorial, signed by eighjieep; reeidents, was received:— „jW e, the undersigned ratepayers of the sub-district of Dovedale, beg to bring before your notice tbe fact that the . way in .which the money has been fepent-and-the work done in our district for a considerable time past has been the cause of a great deal o( dissatisfaction. We, your petitioners, therefore beg tbat the present day-man be dismissed, and that in future all able and willing men may have the chance to get a little work when work ia reqoired to be done, as we believe tbe Board .wonld get more work done for the money, and we think such a system would give general satisfaction." Resolved, 1 " That the amount of work in Dovedale sub-district, such as dber npt from its character admit of being. fet by contract, seems insufficient io afford constant employment to a day-pay man throughout the year, the man employed by the Board in that sub-district be discharged at two months' notice, and that all the work be hereafter done by contract so far as possible, the member of the sub-district and tbe Overseer arranging together io future for such work as most be done by the day. Warrants were signed for £403 Is fid. Messrs Jordan and Tietjen applied for assistance in repairing a by-road in Waimea West, damaged by the late flood. Mr Thompson and the Overseer to examine and report. f A - complaint was received from holders of land in tbe Wairoa Gorge as io damage done td the new road by cattle, in consequence of Mr Irvine -enlting the scrub to feed them. Of'-Fei-ed that notice be sent to Mr Irvine. "' Mr T. Price, jun., attended and complained of the culvert lately made in Pigeon Valley as beiog inadequate . to- tafce'Hhe drainage. The Overseer was directed toget it altered. The assesssriient, so far as it has been 'revised by the assessor appointed by AWBdard, 'having been examined, it was. rfesbl ved tbat tbe Board meet* again on Tuesday, the 29th inst. to examine : the whole previous to publication.

1 1 ■ * ' ■ another communication to the New York Tribune on the aubject. He still hangs to his previously expressed opinion tbat the earth will pass through j the tail of tbe comet, but be does not i think that any damage will be the/ result. To show that these heavenlf visitors are harmless things to colli* with, Mr Parkhurst tells ub that BielaV comet struck the earth nearly trfo years ago, and tbat our passage directly through the head of it was only signalled by a brilliant meteoric display. So\ at most, all we have to anticipate is a\ tolerably fine pyrotechnical exhibition. The Gazette contains a copy of a despatch from the British Ambassador at Paris to the Earl of Derby, covering a letter from the French authorities intimating tbat the Minister of Marine [ very willingly authorises Captain Jacquemarr, of the French war vessel La Vire, to accept the service of plate the provincial authorities of Otago de- * sice to present ihim witb, in recognition/ of bis services on the occasion of tHe wreck of tbe emigrant ship Surat. /
